Recall Campaign SD
Replace Heat Exchanger

Dear Volkswagen Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Safety. Act. Volkswagen has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1985 through early production 1991 model Volkswagen Golf, GTI and Jetta vehicles. Our records show that your car is one of the vehicles involved in this recall action.

Defect Description

The heating system of your vehicle uses a heat exchanger mounted inside the air ventilation housing underneath the dashboard for heat distribution throughout the passenger compartment. We have found that the plastic end-cap connecting the heat exchanger core to the engine cooling system could rupture allowing hot coolant to escape into the passenger compartment. Should this happen, some of the coolant could contact the driver's feet causing injury and steam up the interior of the vehicle, impairing visibility. This may result in an accident.

Remedy

We plan to replace the heat exchanger in your vehicle with an improved unit at no cost to you. We will contact you as soon as your dealer has the parts available that are needed to perform this repair. You should expect to be notified again in writing in the next few months. In the meantime, we suggest that you observe the following:

Precautions

If the coolant temperature warning light on the instrument panel of your car illuminates, activate your emergency flasher, stop your vehicle as soon as you can safely do so and contact your Volkswagen dealer.

Volkswagen is making every effort to manufacture and supply its dealers with a sufficient number of parts to complete the necessary repairs as expeditiously as possible. It you are concerned about the safety of your car, please consult your dealer. We appreciate your patience until we can advise you that you can make the necessary arrangements for the repair.
