The fuel filter removes particles from the fuel that might clog the fuel distributor or injectors; it is located on the pressure side of the pump so that a possible clogged filter will not damage the pump by causing it to run dry, Fig. 18.
The nylon-paper element inside the filter housing is designed to work best with fuel flow in one direction, Fig 19. An arrow on the housing denotes the proper installation direction.
The fuel filter is automatically checked during the fuel pump delivery volume test. If delivery volume is sufficient, the fuel filter can be assumed to be in good condition.
