MODEL(S):

Golf/Jetta, from 1985 m.y.
SUBJECT:

Tie rods and boots, removing/installing (Power steering only)
CAUTION

Power steering gear seals and sliding parts must be kept free of dust and moisture. Any contamination, either from a leaking boot, or through careless service procedures, can lead to scoring of the toothed rack, and eventual gear leakage. A leaking gear must be replaced as an assembly.

Always follow these "rules" for cleanliness when repairing the power steering system:

1. Clean connections and surrounding area thoroughly before loosening.

2. Place parts removed on a clean surface and cover them. Use plastic, paper or lint-free cloths.

3. Carefully cover opened components or plug openings if repair is not going to be done immediately.

4. Install clean parts only.

^ do not remove replacement parts from packaging until just before installation

^ do not use parts that were stored unpacked

5. When the power steering hydraulic system is opened:

^ do not use compressed air in the immediate area

^ do not move the vehicle unless absolutely necessary

The following tie rod and boot removal/installation information, supplements procedures covered in the current repair manual microfiche.

Removing

CAUTION

To avoid damage to the rack and pinion DO NOT attempt to remove tie rod from an installed gear.

^ seal hydraulic ports in steering gear, as follows:

^ port (1) - install Part No. 113 301 229 A (plug)

^ port (2) - install Part No. N 904 674 01 (banjo bolt). As necessary, add 16 mm (1.6 in.) diameter bushings to seal the bolt shank

^ clean steering gear

^ open hose clamp and disconnect boot

^ secure steering gear in a vise with clean, soft jaw covers, to protect rack teeth from dirt and scoring

^ remove tie rod

If parts are to be used again, protect threads from damage at reassembly. Remove old locking compound from stud in tie rod end, and threaded hole in rack, as follows:

^ use die (M14 x 1.5) or wire brush to clean stud in tie rod end

^ check condition of threads, and renew as necessary

Note

When starting the die onto the threads, do not tilt the die. If turning motion is difficult or metal shavings form, the thread has been distorted.

^ seal off opening in the steering gear (arrow), with a cloth

^ use tap (M14 x 1.5) to clean threaded hole in rack

^ clean oil/grease residue from threads using approved nitro thinners, or L160, or equivalents

^ clean threads with compressed air

Installing

^ check/adjust left tie rod length

^ a = 379.5 mm (14-15/16 in.)

^ apply locking compound (D6 or equivalent), to threaded hole (arrow)

^ apply only one drop locking compound in second thread of rack

^ excessive compound will make subsequent removal difficult

CAUTION

Avoid getting locking compound on toothed rack.

^ tighten tie rod

^ specified torque = 70 N-m (52 ft.lb): always verify with a torque wrench

^ examine boot for wear (slits, cracks) and check sealing surface for cleanliness

^ install boot

^ turn tie rod ball joint stud to installation position

^ connect pressure compensating line

^ ensure correct seating

^ seat boot, without damaging sticker A

^ tension hose clamps with pliers V.A.G. 1275 (KD424)

^ B = genuine hose clamps; use Part No. 357 422 837 only

Note

Adjust toe on right tie rod only.

Anytime left tie rod length is disturbed by removal/ replacement of the tie rod end, length must be checked/adjusted to dimension a = 379.5 mm.

^ install steering boots without twisting them

^ adjust toe using right tie rod only
