This product circular describes a revised check of the fully electronic ignition system for the GTI and Jetta GLI.
The following instructions, previously published in Fiche No 2 of 6, Feb 1, 1985, Group 28, become invalid:
^ adjusting data, spark plugs
^ checking electronic ignition
^ Hall sender, checking
^ TCI control unit, checking
Note
When checking the cable in the central connector for the ignition control unit, make sure that terminal 11 is either occupied or open, depending on the engine code.
Coding for ignition control unit corresponding to engine code:
HT = terminal 11 occupied RD = terminal 11 open
Electronic Ignition (TCI-H)
Test Step I, Component Checking:
Knock sensor, vacuum hose, control unit, warning light.
CAUTION
Test lamp must be connected to (+) before connecting (1) to terminal. Do not use "standard" test lamp with an electric bulb. The high electrical consumption of these test lamps can lead to damage of the electrical components.
- connect voltage tester US 1115 to test connector
(1) (single connector with blue wire) and to battery (plus).
^ LED must light up.
- start engine, push gas pedal down once (over 3000/rpm), LED must go out. If LED goes out, test step 1 is complete.
- if LED does not go out, connect jumper wire (2) to connector (1) and hold min. 3 sec. to (-) ground. Then continuous illumination of LED must change to flashing.
Flashing 2x in intervals means:
Fault in knock sensor system:
^ incorrect torque 11 +/- N-m (8 +/- 0.75 ft. 16)
^ open circuit (check wiring diagram)
^ knock sensor defective
^ electronic ignition control unit defective
Flashing 3x in intervals means:
^ break in vacuum hose to electronic ignition control unit
^ electronic control unit defective
Test Step II, Ignition Timing - Advance
Note
The electronic ignition control unit has been planned for use in various models. In this equipment, different timing maps are recorded. The coding is done with terminal 11 (being grounded in the connector).
Coding for engine codes:
HT = terminal 11 occupied and grounded RD = terminal 11 open
Test Stop I
Requirements
^ knock sensor OK
^ coding at terminal 11 correct
^ engine oil temp. minimum 80~C (176~F)
- connect test equipment for ignition timing and RPM
WARNING
Ignition must be switched off when connecting ignition timing tester and RPM display.
- start engine and let idle
- note displayed ignition point base value
- with engine running, pull vacuum hose off ignition control unit and increase speed
Engine codes:
HT - 4300/RPM RD - 3000/RPM
- read ignition point and subtract base value calculated adjustment value must be:
for HT: approx. 14~ for RD: approx. 16~
IF NO:
^ in HT, no ground on terminal 11 in connector for electronic control unit
^ electronic ignition control unit defective
Hall Sender, Checking
Note
Check required only if ignition spark is not present.
- remove connector from Hall TCI control unit (in glove box) and connect voltage tester US 1115 to terminals 4 and 6
- actuate starter and check signal from Hall sender
^ If LED flickers, Hall sender is OK and test is complete
IF NO, continue with test:
- remove connector from Hall sender (on distributor)
- connect voltage tester US 1115 to outer connector of plug and, with ignition ON, check voltage supply from electronic ignition control unit to Hall sender.
^ LED must light up
- push up rubber sleeve on Hall sender connector
- connect voltage tester US 1115 to center terminal of Hall sender connector and to battery (+)
- actuate starter and check signal from Hall sender
If the LED flickers the Hall sender is OK
IF NO:
^ Hall sender defective
^ electronic ignition control unit defective
Hall TCI Control Unit, Checking
Requirement:
^ ignition coil OK
- remove connector from Hall TCI control unit (in glove box)
- turn ignition ON
- set digital multimeter US 1119 to measuring range 20 DCV
- connect measuring leads to terminal 2 (from battery (-) and to terminal 4 (from ignition coil (+)
- check voltage supply to control unit.
^ specification: approx. battery voltage
IF NO:
- repair break in wiring
- connect voltage tester US 1115 to terminal 4 and 6
- actuate starter and check signal from Hall sender
LED must flicker
IF NO, check Hall sender
- switch ignition OFF
- connect connector to Hall TCI control unit
- remove connector from Hall sender on distributor
- connect test leads to terminal 1 (-) and terminal 15 (+) of the ignition coil
- switch ignition ON
^ specified value: min. 2 volts, within 2 seconds must drop to 0
IF NO:
- replace TCI-Hall control unit
- check ignition coil for fluid leakage, replace coil if necessary
- touch center wire of disconnected Hall sender to ground
- displayed voltage value must briefly rise to min. 2 volts.
IF NO:
- replace Hall TCI control unit
- switch ignition OFF
- re-connect Hall sender connector.
