Engine: Service and Repair


The engine and transaxle are removed as an assembly on these vehicles.
1. On air conditioned models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove engine trim panel and lower apron.
b. Remove condenser from crossmember and radiator, then all ducts.
c. Disconnect electrical connectors from radiator fan shroud and A/C compressor.
d. Remove alternator and A/C compressor V-belts.
e. Disconnect idle boost valve vacuum hoses.
f. Disconnect air filter assembly along with air flow assembly and position aside.
g. Remove compressor and condenser.
2. On all models, disconnect driveshafts from transaxle, then suspend driveshafts from body with wire.
3. Remove exhaust manifold spring clamp.
4. On models equipped with power steering, proceed as follows:
a. Remove bolts attaching adjusting pivot bracket.
b. Remove V-belt, then suspend pump from body crossmember with wire.
c. Remove fluid reservoir with mount and suspend with wire from body crossmember.
5. On all models, remove front apron attaching bolt and trim, then apron and trim.
6. Disconnect and remove battery.
7. Remove coolant reservoir cap, then drain coolant from coolant hose and/or thermostat flange.
8. Remove radiator grille.
9. Disconnect headlight and radiator support electrical connectors, then remove radiator mounts.
10. Disconnect hood release cable from hood latch and disconnect cable from support.
11. Disconnect cooling fan electrical connector.
12. Remove radiator support, coolant hoses, radiator and fan shroud assembly.
13. Disconnect necessary fuel injection and ignition system wiring.
14. Disconnect ground connections.
15. On manual transaxle models, disconnect upshift indicator vacuum switch, transaxle switch and the starter connectors.
16. On automatic transaxle models, disconnect battery cable to starter and starter cable CIS-E wire harness.
17. On GTI and GLI models, disconnect idle stabilizer control valve, throttle plate switch and knock sensor.
18. On manual transaxle models, disconnect clutch cable from transaxle.
19. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle. Close all openings.
20. On automatic transaxle models, position selector lever in Park position, then disconnect accelerator cable and selector lever cable from actuator levers and mounts.
21. On all models, remove gear shift rods and bracket.
22. On manual transaxle models, disconnect accelerator cable at throttle linkage and at mounting bracket. Do not remove throttle linkage.
23. On all models, remove cold start valve, but leave fuel line connected.
24. Disconnect vacuum hose from intake manifold, then connecting hose.
25. If equipped, remove warm up regulator.
26. Disconnect fuel injectors and close all openings.
27. Remove intake manifold pre-heat hose, then purple hose from ``T'' connection on throttle body.
28. If equipped, remove hose from throttle body to idle boost valve.
29. Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose from air cleaner housing
30. Remove rear engine mount attaching bolts, then rear mount.
31. Disconnect transaxle mount.
32. Remove front mount attaching bolt, then carefully remove transaxle from mount by turning slightly.
33. Attach suitable engine lifting equipment onto engine, and remove engine from vehicle.
34. Reverse procedure to install.
