Date: January 5, 1993
Subject:
Power steering gear, fluid leaks from pinion seal at low ambient temperatures
Model(s):
Passat, Golf, Jetta
all m.y.
Condition
Fluid leaks past the pinion seal due to a loss of elasticity at very low ambient temperatures. The leakage stops as temperature increases.
Production
The seal material has been changed to HNBR for improved resistance to extremely cold temperatures. Also, a tensioning spring was added to the inner circumference of the sealing surface.
The improved seal has been installed in production as of:
Golf/Jetta:
8/91 VIN 1GNW061881
Passat:
8/91 VIN 31NE026718
Service
