Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


Exc. Transaxle Code NH

1. Remove battery ground strap, fan housing and grille.
2. Rotate crankshaft until each torque converter bolt appears in opening in top of transaxle housing and remove 3 torque converter bolts. Use adapter 3052 or equivalent to rotate crankshaft, ensuring pin on tool fully engages recess in cooling fan hub.
3. Remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transaxle and disconnect driveshafts from transaxle.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors from starter motor and remove starter.
5. Loosen dipstick tube bracket.
6. Disconnect accelerator linkage, pry off accelerator cable and remove clip securing transaxle selector cable.
7. Install engine support tool 785/1 or equivalent following manufacturer's instruction.
8. Disconnect ground strap, then remove selector cable bracket and cable from transaxle.
9. Support transaxle with suitable jack, then remove 4 bolts securing transaxle mounts to body.
10. Remove engine/transaxle bolts, separate transaxle from engine ensuring torque converter remains with transaxle, then remove transaxle and converter assembly.
11. Reverse procedure to install ensuring torque converter is properly seated in transaxle.
12. Torque engine/transaxle bolts to 22 ft. lbs., torque converter bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and CV joint flange bolts to 33 ft. lbs.

Transaxle Code NH

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove upper engine/transaxle bolts.
2. Remove transaxle dipstick and bolt securing dipstick tube bracket.
3. Rotate crankshaft until each torque converter bolt appears in opening in top of transaxle housing and remove 3 torque converter bolts.
4. Remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transaxle and disconnect driveshafts from transaxle.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors from starter motor and remove starter.
6. Remove nut and disconnect pushrod from transaxle kickdown lever.
7. Pry off ball socket and remove accelerator cable from bracket, then remove retaining clip and disconnect transaxle selector cable.
8. Clamp off coolant hoses at transaxle cooler, then disconnect hoses from cooler.
9. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle, and remove selector cable and bracket from transaxle.
10. Support transaxle with suitable jack, install engine support 785/1 or equivalent under engine, then 4 bolts securing transaxle mount to body.
11. Lower transaxle slightly, then remove lower engine/transaxle bolts.
12. Separate transaxle from engine ensuring torque converter remains with transaxle, then remove transaxle.
13. Revere procedure to install, ensuring torque converter is properly seated in transaxle. When properly seated, torque converter can be rotated by hand and converter hub should be recessed approximately 10 mm (3/8 inch) from transaxle mounting surface.
14. Torque engine/transaxle bolts to 41 ft. lbs., transaxle mount bolts to 30 ft. lbs., torque converter bolts to 22 ft. lbs. and CV joint flange bolts to 33 ft. lbs.
