Inspection

INSPECTING COOLANT PUMP:

- To inspect the coolant pump, first remove the V-belt. Firmly grasp the coolant pump pulley and check for play in all directions. Rotate the pulley and check that the shaft turns smoothly.
- Inspect the pump for leaks. An occasional drop of coolant from the pump shaft is acceptable. A larger leak or a shaft that is excessively loose or noisy indicates a worn bushing. The pump is faulty and should be replaced. Replace the V-belt at the same time if it is worn or damaged.
- Only basic hand tools are required to replace the coolant pump. It is replaced as a unit, new or Volkswagen remanufactured, as parts for rebuilding are not generally available.
- Always use a new gasket between the pump and the housing, and a new 0-ring (Volkswagen Part No. 059 121 119) between the housing and cylinder block.

NOTE: Volkswagen part numbers and special tool order numbers listed are for reference only. They are subject to change. Always check with your authorized Volkswagen dealer for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
