Without Volkswagen Tester VAG 1551

Requirements:
- Engine warm.
- Oil temperature at least 176°F (80°C).
- Idle switch OK.
- Closed at idle.
- engine idling.

Specifications:
- Basic ignition timing checking 4° to 8° before TDC.
- Basic ignition timing adjusting 6°±1° before TDC.

WARNING:
- Keep hands, clothing and other objects clear of the radiator cooling fan. The fan may start at any time, even when the ignition is switched off.

To adjust basic ignition timing:
1. With the ignition off, loosen the two distributor hold-down bolts.

CAUTION:
- Loosen the distributor just enough so that it can be moved hand, but only with deliberate effort. The distributor should not be so loose that engine vibration alone will turn it.

Timing Mark:

2. Start the engine and recheck the timing. Adjust ignition timing by gradually turning the distributor housing until the marks are aligned.
3. Stop the engine and, without moving the distributor, tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
Tightening torque:
- Distributor hold-down bolts 10 N.m (89 in-lb).
4. Start the engine and recheck the ignition timing. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.
- Ignition timing that varies continuously at a steady idle may be an indication of worn distributor shaft bearings. These bearings are not available as separate replacement parts. This problem can only be corrected by replacing the entire distributor assembly.
