1989/90 Model Volkswagen Passat and 1989/90 Model Corrado Vehicles Replace Heat Exchanger

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a voluntary safety recall campaign for 1989/90 model Volkswagen Passat and 1989/90 4-cylinder Corrado vehicles. This recall pertains to the replacement of the heat exchanger.

Defect Description

It is possible that if an engine overheats and the vehicle continues to be operated in that condition, the heat exchanger could leak.

Vehicle Identification Number Range

The vehicles affected are within the following vehicle identification number ranges:





Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles. Use of the V-Crest campaign inquiry system will allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle, within the above VIN ranges, requires the corrective work.

NOTE Volkswagen will not reimburse under this recall action any duplicate recall repair work or a repair outside the VIN range.

Remedial Action

Replace the heat exchanger in each affected vehicle with a new unit.

Important: Please Provide A Copy To All Personnel With Recall-Related Responsibilities!

Owner Notification Mailing

Volkswagen will mail first class notification letters to all known owners of affected vehicles beginning on or about September 12,1996. A copy of the applicable owner letter is included in this circular.

Vehicle Allocation

By separate mail and prior to owner notification, we will furnish you a computer list containing information for vehicles retailed by your dealership.

Work Procedure

All affected vehicles are to be repaired in accordance with the details outlined in the enclosed Work Procedure Booklet. Please ensure that technicians follow the steps and sequences outlined in this procedure. Additionally, we will provide you, prior to the onset of this recall, a video describing the most important and delicate steps of the Corrado work procedure. Also ensure that technicians view the instructional video prior to performing this recall work on a Corrado vehicle for the first time.

Special Tool

Some of the component fastening screws in the dashboard are more accessible by using an offset screwdriver. We will, therefore, supply each dealer with one (1)angle adapter, free of charge. Additional adapters, part number AEG014891, can be obtained by calling Equipment Solutions at 1(800) 892-9650.

Parts Information

We will automatically ship to you an initial supply of the following parts prior to the owner notification mailing:





Additional required parts must be ordered by you from your facing parts depot.

Please refrain from over-ordering any of these applicable parts (except antifreeze); you may be required to required to return excess Inventory.

Replacement Time / Reimbursement

To ensure proper payment, be sure to enter the correct reimbursement data into the system only for VINs showing a TM code in the V-Crest system.





TM Data Entry Procedure

The system automatically enters the labor and part numbers applicable to each of the listed reimbursement codes.





For vehicles which, according to your information are unreachable, please enter into the system one of the codes indicated, as applicable:

Coolant Disposal

The coolant drained during the repair work requires proper storage and disposal. To store/dispose the coolant waste material, follow your Canadian storage and disposal requirements.

Parts Disposal / Return

All removed parts, including heat exchangers, must be discarded immediately.

Customer Reimbursement Requests

Should a customer inquire about possible reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred for a previous repair to the heat exchanger, please instruct the customer to make a copy of the repair order and mail the original together with a cover note to:

Additional Campaigns

Some of the vehicles may be involved in an additional campaign(s). If so, the respective campaign code has been printed on the recall authorization form, as well as on your vehicle allocation list. In the interest of minimizing customer inconvenience, please ensure that any such additional campaign(s) is performed at the same time. For verification, always check your V-Crest recall system.

The V-Crest is the only campaign verification system; other systems are not valid.

Dealer Obligation

To ensure customer satisfaction, as well as minimize inconvenience, dealers are urged to service each vehicle at the scheduled service appointment time, offer and supply a loaner vehicle for one (1) day, and make sure that each owner vehicle is returned to the customer washed and cleaned inside. Every effort should be made to reduce any inconvenience to customers.

Dealers are to service each vehicle subject to this recall regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or selling dealer, from this time forward.
