Fuel Filter: Description and Operation
Fuel Pump:
The Fuel Filter is located under the rear of the vehicle, it is attached to the same mounting bracket as the main fuel pump, fuel accumulator and fuel reservoir.
Due to the extremely close tolerances found in several components of the CIS-E Motronic fuel injection system, it is necessary to use an extremely fine Fuel Filter in order to guarantee faultless performance of the CIS-E Motronic system. The Fuel Filter retains particles of dirt and other foreign matter that would adversely affect proper functioning of the CIS-E Motronic injection system. The Fuel Filter contains a paper filter element which is backed up by a strainer. This combination results in a high degree of cleaning being achieved. A supporting plate is used to hold the filter elements in place in the filter housing. It is of utmost importantance that the direction of flow indicated on the filter housing is complied with. Since the fuel filter is a regular maintenance item it should be replaced at the scheduled maintenance interval, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES.
Mini Fuel Filter:
There may also be a mini fuel filter inside the fuel supply line banjo bolt, located at the fuel distributor. This filter is installed at the factory as a precaution when the fuel system is new. The mini fuel filter is not changed, but eliminated as a one time only procedure. For more information, refer to COMPONENT TESTING PROCEDURES.
