Reading Fault Memory Using VAG 1551 Diagnostic Tester

1. After connecting VAG 1551, display will alternate between ``VAG self-diagnosis HELP 1 - Rapid data transfer'' and ``VAG self-diagnosis HELP 2 - Blink code output.''
2. Select operating mode 2, blink code output. Press ``arrow'' button and hold, ``B link code output is being initiated'' will be displayed.
3. After approximately 2.5 seconds, ``Blink code output Permanent ground on exciter wire'' will be displayed.
4. Release ``arrow'' button, then turn ignition switch to On position. ABS indicator will illuminate.
5. Operate ``arrow'' button briefly, if a fault is stored, it will appear via the indicator light (blinking) and in tester display as ``Blink code XXXX.''
6. Operate ``arrow'' button briefly to call up next blink code. If ``Blink code 4444 No faults recognized!'' is displayed, turn ignition switch to Off position, self-diagnosis is complete.
7. If ``Blink code output No blink code received'' is displayed, check wire from terminals 26 and 27 of ABS control unit to tester.
8. Continue fault code call-up until ``Blink code 0000 End of output,'' then ``Blink code output is completed!'' are displayed.
9. Turn ignition switch to Off position, then refer to Fig. 4, for blink code troubleshooting charts and eliminate faults.
10. After repairs have been made, turn ignition switch to On position for approximately four seconds. If ABS indicator light goes out, ABS system is free of faults.
11. Erase fault memory, then if ABS indicator light does not go out, read fault memory again. If more than one fault was displayed, faults which have been eliminated will also be displayed again.
