Distributor: Testing and Inspection

1. Check for oil at the base of distributor (on the outside). If oil is present and leak comes from the distributor, check for cracks at the shaft. If no cracks are found, replace distributor O-ring.
2. Check the rest of the housing for damage.
3. Remove cap and rotor.
4. Check for oil on the inside of distributor. If oil is present and leak comes from distributor, replace and retest with new unit.
5. Check for drive and rotor shaft free play by moving the rotor shaft back/forth and left/right. There should be no or very little free play.
If shaft bushings are loose and free play is very noticeable, replace and retest with new distributor.
6. Reinstall cap and rotor.
