Condition

During cranking, engine starter motor is noisy or starter motor does not engage. As a result, the bendix gear can damage the torque converter carrier plate.

Production

Engagement function of the starter motor has been improved through design changes in the bendix drive and solenoid contact tolerence changes as of:

Mexican produced Golf/Jetta vehicles have the improved starter motors installed as of 10/90 production.

Service

Replace starter motor with a NEW Starter Motor, Part No. 027 911 023, and torque converter carrier plate when necessary.
