Final Drive, Adjusting

When reusing bearings, intermediate gear shaft and differential adjusting ring should be set to marks made before removing.

When replacing differential housing or it bearings are to be reused, measure effective turning torque (see page 39.22) before disassembling

Following instructions apply only if bearings are replaced.

- install bearing outer race in housing
- install bearing outer race in one-way clutch support (without shim)
- install drive shaft and one-way clutch support

- position end plate and dial gauge holder and zero dial gauge with no preload

- move shaft up and down (arrow) without turning and note reading

CAUTION
Do not turn shaft as this will give an incorrect reading

- determine thickness of shim
- add 0.10 mm for preload to reading and 0.10 mm settling allowance

- remove final drive cover, select shim according to table

Note
Measure shims at several points with a micrometer. Check for burrs and damage. Use only good shims

Note
When measuring turning torque (preload) bearings must be lubricated with hypoid oil. if other oils are used measurements will be incorrect

- check that pinion shaft turning torque is 120-400 Ncm (11-35 in. lb.)
- A = Ncm or in lb torque wrench

- adjust intermediate gear shaft and tighten by hand
- Insert spark plug socket wrench in intermediate gear shaft (12 point opening)
- make final adjustment by tightening intermediate gear shaft 1 points (arrow)
- install locking plate
- insert differential and install side cover

- install adjusting ring and tighten by hand
- make final adjustments by turning adjusting ring 3 notches In (arrow)
- measure total turning torque on pinion shaft; reading must be between 320-600 Ncm (28-52 In. lb.)
- install locking plate for adjusting ring
