Differential, Adjusting
Adjustment of differential is necessary when replacing:transmission case
gear carrier
differential housing
differential bearings
- install outer race of bearing (opposite ring gear) with shim S2 in gear carrier
Shim S2 is always 1 mm thick
CAUTION
Inner and outer races of bearings are matched. Do not interchange
- install outer race on ring gear side without shim S1 in transmission case
- install differential in gear carrier
- place transmission case in position with gasket and tighten 5 bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
- assemble and zero dial indicator with 1 mm preload
- move differential up and down and note reading (example 0.90 mm)
CAUTION
Do not turn differential when measuring because bearings will settle and give incorrect reading
Shim S1 determining
- correct bearing preload is obtained by adding constant figure (0.40 mm) to measured reading
Example
Measured reading 0.90mm
Preload (constant figure) + 0.40mm
S1 = 1.30mm
- remove gear carrier housing
- drive out outer bearing race
- insert determined shim S1
- thickest shim first
Shims available
(different shims make it possible to select precise thickness)

- drive in outer race and install gear carrier housing with gasket and tighten
- check turning torque
- A = Ncm or in lb torque wrench
- lubricate bearings with transmission oil
- check that turning torque is
- new bearings 120 to 350 Ncm (10.6 to 31 in. lb.)
- used bearings minimum 30 Ncm (2.7 in. lb.)
