Brake Drum: Service and Repair






Component Notes And Information

NOTE: During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.

1 Grease cap
- Always replace
2 Cotter pin
3 Locking ring
4 Nut
- For adjusting wheel bearing play, refer to Steering and Suspension
5 Thrust washer
6 Outer wheel bearing
7 Rotor for wheel speed sensor
- Only on models with ABS
8 Brake drum
- Diameter: 230mm
- Wear limit: 231.5mm
9 Stub axle
10. Hex socket head bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
11. Wheel speed sensor
- Only on models with ABS
12 Backing plate with brake shoes
13 Dished washer
- Large contact surface faces backing plate
14 Hex bolt
- Tighten to: 60 Nm (44 ft lb)

Removal
1. Remove wheel.

Rear Brake Adjustment Releasing:




2. Insert screwdriver though bolt hole as illustrated.
3. Push adjusting wedge upward to allow shoes to retract away from drum.
4. Remove grease cap.
5. Remove cotter pin, lock ring and wheel bearing nut.
6. Pull drum from stub axle.
7. Remove wheel bearing seal and inner and outer wheel bearings. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.

Installation
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
- Adjust wheel bearings. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
- With vehicle stationary, apply brakes firmly to allow adjuster wedges to position.
