Ignition Switch: Service and Repair



STEERING COLUMN INGNITON SWITCH REPLACING





Removal
1 - Driver air bag
- Air Bag
2 - Hex nut
- 40 Nm (29 ft lb)
3 - Steering wheel with coil spring for air bag
4 - Steering column switch securing screws
5 - Switch for turn signals, cruise control system, high and low beam head light, flasher and emergency light switch
- See Figure 2 below.
6 - Switch for windshield wiper and wipe/wash operation
- See Figure 2 below.
7 - Column tube
8 - Steering column
9 - Support ring
10 - Steering column lock housing securing bolt
- 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
11 - Steering lock housing
- See Figure 3 below.
12 - Ignition/starter switch.
- Remove steering lock housing.
- See Figure 3 below.
- Remove securing screws
13 - Contact ring
14 - Lock cylinder
- See Figure 4 below.
15 - Spring
16 - Clamping washer

Turn signal and windsheild wiper switch, removing



- Remove steering wheel.
- Remove securing screws -arrows-.
- Remove connector to turn signal and windshield wiper switch.
- Remove turn signal and windshield wiper switch from the steering column.

Steering lock housing, removing/installling



Removing
- Remove ignition switch.
- Remove clamping washer, spring and contact ring.
- Remove steering lock housing securing bolts.
- Remove steering lock housing from column tube and steering column.

Installing
- Slide steering lock housing onto steering column.
- Drive contact ring, spring and clamping washer onto steering column with tool VW 420 (-1-).

Note: If the steering column is not projecting fully out of the column tube, pull steering column out further by turning on hex nut.

- Procedure may differ on vehicles with ignition key removal lock.

Lock cylinder, removing/installing



- Removing steering lock housing
- Mark steering lock housing for drilling.
a- 12 mm (0.47 in)
b- 10 mm (0.394 in)
- Drill steering lock housing (approx. 3 mm (0.120 in), until the lock cylinder spring is evident (hole depth approx. 3 mm) (0.120 in).
- Using opposite end of drill, compress lock spring and remove lock cylinder.

Caution: Steering lock housing with drilling must not be reinstalled.

- Push lock cylinder into steering lock housing.
- By slightly turning key in lock cylinder it can be pushed onto the stop.
