Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Description and Operation

To ensure satisfactory and successful gearbox repairs, the maximum possible care and cleanliness, and the use of the proper tools is essential. The basic rules for safety are also important when performing repair work.

When fitting the gearbox to the engine, ensure that the dowel sleeves are correctly located.

Loosen and tighten all cover and housing bolts in a diagonal sequence.

Be sure to always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.

When a new gearbox has been installed, it must be filled with oil.

If the gearbox is to be filled with oil after it has been installed in the vehicle, check the oil level as follows:

a. Fill with oil up to lower edge of filler plug hole and refit plug.

b. Start the engine, engage a gear and allow gearbox to turn over for approx. 2 minutes.

c. Switch off the engine and top off the gearbox oil to the lower edge of filler plug hole again.
