COMPONENT NOTES
Bearing Cap (1)
- Note installed position.
- Note installation and tightening sequence.

Bearing Cap Nut (2)
- Tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

Camshafts (3)
- Check axial clearence with lifters removed.
- Axial clearence: 0.15 mm (0.0060 inch)
- Radial clearence: 0.1 mm (0.0039 inch)
- Maximum runout: 0.01 mm (0.0004 inch)

Trigger Wheel (5)
- For Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor.
- When installing, contact surfaces must be dry.

Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (6)
- Tighten to: 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
- Counter hold with a suitable 22 mm wrench on camshafts when removing or installing.
- Oil contact surface when installing.

Cylinder Head Deck Height (7)
- Dimension a, minimum: 139.5 mm (5.4963 inch).

Valves (9)
- Do not rework, only lapping is permitted.

Valve Guide (10)
- Replacement guides have a collar.

Hydraulic Lifter (15)
- Do not interchange used lifters.
- Store with camshaft contact surfaces down.
- Oil contact surfaces.
- Remove prior to checking camshaft axial clearence.

INSTALLATION
1. Install lifters into cylinder head, then oil running surfaces of both camshafts.

NOTE:
- Observe engine running direction markings on double chain.
- When installing the camshafts the recess for the camshaft sprockets -arrows- must be at top.
- When installing bearing caps ensure that the identification mark is readable from the exhaust side of cylinder head and that the arrow points to vibration damper end.

2. Install camshafts as follows:

a. Camshaft for cylinders 1, 3 and 5:
- Tighten bearing caps 3 and 5 alternately and diagonally to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Install bearing caps 1 and 7 and tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

b. Camshaft for cylinders 2, 4 and 6:
- Tighten bearing caps 2 and 6 alternately and diagonally to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Install bearing cap 4 and tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).

3. Clean sealing surfaces of cover for camshaft sprockets and cylinder head.
4. Remove old sealant from 3 mm holes in cylinder head gasket -arrows-.

NOTE: When the cylinder head is installed, the holes in the head gasket are only half visible.

5. Install camshaft sprockets with double chain.
6. Fill 3 mm holes in cylinder head gasket with sealant part No. AMV 188 001 02, or equivalent.
7. Coat sealing surfaces of cover for camshafts with sealant.
8. Oil O-ring (item 13 in main illustration) and insert into camshaft cover.
9. Install camshaft cover for camshafts, insert old securing bolts and tighten lightly.
10. First tighten 8 mm mounting bolts to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), then tighten 6 mm mounting bolts to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
11. Install chain tensioner for double chain and tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: If the chain tensioner has been pulled apart bleed chain tensioner before installing.

CAUTION:
- When new lifters have been installed, the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes.
- Hydraulic circuit must settle (otherwise valves will strike pistons).
