Transmission, Erratic Shifting, No DTC's Stored in Transmission Control Module (TCM)

Model(s):
All with 4 speed Automatic Transmission (AG4)

Supersedes T.B. Group 01 Number 97-16 dated Aug. 27, 1997

Supersession due to temperature reading change.

Condition

Transmission holds shift too long, will not upshift or will unnecessarily downshift.

No DTC's stored in TCM.

May be caused by an incorrect oil temperature sensor reading from the "Conductor Strip with integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor" -G93- (flex foil).

Service

To check for incorrect oil temperature sensor reading, perform the following (with engine cold):

- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool.

- Switch ignition ON and start engine.

- Press button -1- to select "Rapid Data Transfer" Mode.

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to enter Address word 02 "Transmission Electronics".

- Press -Q- button to confirm entry.

- Press -> button to advance program.

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select Function 08 "Read measuring value block".

- Press -Q- button to confirm entry.

- Press buttons -0-, -0- and -5- to select display group number 005 "Read measuring value block".

- Press -Q- button to confirm entry.

- Road test vehicle.

WARNING!
When road testing a vehicle, ALWAYS use a second Technician to operate the VAG 1551 Scan Tool.

Never place anything between you and the driver or passenger Airbag.

When condition occurs:

- Check channel 1 "ATF temperature".

^ Normal transmission fluid operating temperature is 110°C - 120°C.

^ At approx. 137°C the TCM goes into "hot running program".

Note:
Transmission oil temperature may also rapidly climb to a high temperature within the first few miles of driving.

If the VAG 1551 Scan Tool oil temperature reads approx. 137°C or higher:

- Press -> button to advance program.

- Press buttons -0- and -6- to "end output".

When procedure applies to vehicles within The New Vehicle Limited Warranty and adheres to Warranty Policy guidelines, use the following:

Labor Operation: 3700716 50TU

- Replace "Conductor Strip with integrated Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor" -G93- (flex foil) as outlined in the appropriate Repair Manual.

- Road test vehicle to verify condition has been eliminated.
