Axle Flange Oil Seal, Replacing




Axle flange oil seal (right side), replacing
Special tools, and auxiliary items
^ Extractor lever VW 681
^ Press piece 3236
^ Pressing device 3244
^ Press piece 3323
^ Puller (e.g. Kukko 18/1)

Removing
- Only loosen axle shaft/wheel hub nut and wheel bolts when vehicle is standing on its own wheels.
- Raise vehicle
- Remove wheel.
- Remove right axle shaft heat shield.
- Remove axle shaft
- Remove cap by piercing cap center with a screw driver and prying out.
- Place pan under transmission.
- Remove axle flange circlip.





- Remove axle flange.
A- Puller, e.g. Kukko 18/1
- Pull out axle flange oil seal with VW 681.

Installing





- Drive new seal in to stop, ensure seal goes in straight.
- Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.





- Pull in axle flange.
- Install new circlip and new sealing cap.
- Install axle shaft.
- Install wheel.
- With transmission installed, check final drive oil level. Differential Fluid - A/T

Tightening torques
Axle shaft to transmission M 8 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Axle shaft to transmission M 10 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.)
Axle shaft to wheel hub:
M 14 bolt
- Always replace bolt 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) + 180°
M 16 bolt
- Always replace bolt 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) + 180°
Wheel bolts to wheel hub 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
Upper transverse link to swing arm 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Protective plate above right axle shaft to transmission 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)
