Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable
- VAG 1788/10 Mechanical throttle activation (or second technician)
Requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- Vehicles with automatic transmission: place Transmission Range selector lever in "P" or "N" position.
- ALL electrical consumers switched OFF.
- A/C switched OFF (if installed)
- Throttle angle less than 10 angel degree % Display group 03, Display field 3
- Intake Air Temperature less than 90 °C See Display group 04, display field 4
- Coolant Temp. less than 95 °C See Display group 04, display field 3
Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. [1][2][3][4]Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Switch ON ignition but do NOT start engine.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics" address word 01.
Work step 1: Check DTC memory

Work step 2: Erase DTC memory

NOTE: The Readiness code is reset or erased after DTC memory is erased.

Work step 6: Oxygen sensor aging diagnostic (period duration monitoring)

- Three Way Catalyst temperature must be greater than 352 °C
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 2200 and 2800 RPM until Display field 4 indicates specified value "B1-S1 OK."
If specifications not obtained
- Check DTC memory.
If specification obtained
- Maintain engine speed between 2200 and 2800 RPM.
Work step 7: Three Way Catalytic converter diagnostic

- Press 0, 4 and 6 buttons to select "Display group 46"
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Maintain engine speed between 2700 and 3300 RPM until display in field 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Three Way Catalyst temperature must be greater than 352 °C.
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 2700 and 3300 RPM until specified value "Cat B1 .OK" appears in Display field 4.
NOTE: The Three Way Catalytic converter diagnostic takes approx. 60 seconds.
If specifications not obtained
- Check DTC memory.
If specification obtained
- Remove VAG 1788/10 engine speed adjuster from throttle pedal (if installed).
- Press C button on Scan Tool.
Work step 8: Fuel tank vent system diagnostic
NOTE: Engine must not be under load during this diagnostic or it will be interrupted and will not start again until the engine is revved-up.
Requirements
- Throttle valve angle less than 10 °C See Display group 03, display field 3
- Intake Air Temperature less than 90 °C See Display group 04, display field 4
- Engine Coolant Temperature less than 95 °C See Display group 04, display field 3
Work sequence
- Run engine for 30 seconds at idle and check specifications.

When the diagnostic is initiated by the Engine Control Module, the value in display field 4 will jump from "Test OFF" to "Test ON."
- Run engine at idle until specification: "EVAP OK" appears in field 4.
If specifications not obtained, check DTC memory.
If specification is obtained, press button 3 (VAG 1551) or t button (VAG 1552).

If specification obtained
- Press C button on Scan Tool.
Work step: 9 : Secondary Air Injection system diagnostic
