CAUTION:
- If a vehicle has to be moved after removing the drive axle, first install the outer CV joint and tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft lb). Otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged
- Do not attempt to weld or straighten the load bearing suspension components, or components that locate the wheels.
- Always replace self-locking nuts.
- Always replace corroded nuts/bolts.
1. Suspension strut

- Always replace
- 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 1/4-turn (90°)
- Never less than 90°!
- Turning angle tolerance 90° - 120°
3. Wheel bearing housing Vehicles:
- With 85 kW (115 Hp) gasoline engine
- With TDI engine

- 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
7. Wheel bearing
- Always replace (bearing is destroyed when pressed out)
- Pressing out refer to Fig. 4
- Pressing in refer to Fig. 5
8. Circlip
- Make sure clip is correctly seated
9. Wheel hub with ABS wheel speed sensor rotor
- Rotor is welded to wheel hub
- Check rotor for lateral run-out refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
10. Guide pins
- 27.5 Nm (20 ft. lbs.)

Vehicles:
- With 85 kW (115 Hp) gasoline engine
- With TDI engine
- Servicing refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
CAUTION:
- Do not loosen the brake hose when working on the front suspension
- Suspend the brake caliper using a piece of wire or similar
- Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose. The unsupported weight can stretch and damage the hose.

- 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
15. Self-locking 12-point nut
- Always replace
- Tightening refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints.
16. Phillips-head screw
- 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)

- Vehicles with 110 kW (150 Hp) gasoline engine
CAUTION:
- Do not loosen the brake hose when working on the front suspension
- Suspend the brake caliper using a piece of wire or similar
- Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose. The unsupported weight can stretch and damage the hose.
19. Self-locking combi bolt
- 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
- Clean ribs on under side of bolt head
20. Wheel bearing housing
- Vehicles with 110 kW (150 Hp) gasoline engine
21. Self-locking nut
- 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
23. Self-locking nut
- Always replace
- 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
24. Hex bolt
- Always replace
25. Socket-head bolt
- 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
26. ABS wheel speed sensor

- Install circlip.
Notes:
- Make sure that the circlip is seated correctly.
- The opening of the circlip must beat the bottom of the wheel bearing housing as shown in Fig 3.
