Comfort System - Door Lock Micro-Switch Inoperative

Comfort System ECM, Unnecessary Replacement

Model(s):
Passat, New Beetle 1998 -->

Condition

Door lock micro-switch becomes inoperative.

Symptoms may include:

^ Alarms sounds without reason

^ Alarm sounds under high humidity condition

^ Alarm works intermittently

^ Dome light flashes

^ Dome light / courtesy lights stay on

^ Keyless entry remote does does not function

^ Alarm activation signal (beep) does not sound

Service

Comfort System ECM's replaced for the above symptoms have been found fully functional when tested.

Prior to replacing an Electronic Control Module:

Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool and check for stored DTC's as follows:

Note:

CAUTION!

- Press buttons -4- and -6- to insert "Comfort System" address word 46.





- Press -Q- button to confirm input.





Control module identification of central control module for comfort system -J393- is indicated on display.

- Press --> button.





Identification of driver's door control module is indicated on display.

- Press the --> button.





Identification of passenger's door control module is indicated on display.

- Press the --> button.

Note:
Control modules for the rear doors on four door models will also be identified.

After all control modules are displayed:





Indicated on display.

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02.

- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

If DTC's are found:

- Correct as necessary.





If no DTC's are found:

- Press the --> button.

Read Measuring value blocks from lock switches for open or closed contacts as follows:





Indicated on display.

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block".





Press -Q- button to confirm input.





Indicated on display.

- Press buttons -0- and -0- and -3- to input display group number 3 (003).





Display field 3 will read Locked or unlocked depending on door lock position.

- Use power door lock switch to lock and unlock door several times while observing display.

Display should change to locked or unlocked as door is locked or unlocked.

- Press the --> button and repeat reading Measuring Value Block for passenger door and (rear doors on Passat vehicles).





Indicated on display.

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block".





Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Read Measuring Value Block for display group 6 (006) passenger door and repeat procedure (locking and unlocking door several times while watching display).

- Read Measuring Value Block for display group 7 (007) right rear door (Passat vehicles) and repeat procedure (locking and unlocking door several times while watching display).

- Read Measuring Value Block for display group 8 (008) left rear door (Passat vehicles) and repeat procedure (locking and unlocking door several times while watching display).

If during this procedure, any display did not match the condition of the locks i.e. door was locked but display showed unlocked or door was unlocked and display showed locked, the micro-switch in the door lock mechanism is malfunctioning.

- Replace malfunctioning door lock mechanism.
