Camshaft adjustment, checking

Test sequence

Engine code: ATQ

- Connect VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) (or VAG1552). Start engine and select Engine Control Module (ECU) using "address word" 01.

Indicated on Display
- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select function "Read Measuring Value Block" and press -Q- button to confirm input.






Indicated on Display
- Press buttons -0-, -9- and -1- to select "display group number 91" and press -Q button to confirm input.






Indicated on Display: (1 to 4 = display fields)
This measuring value block is valid for camshaft adjustment, cylinder bank 1:
- Observe indication in display field 3.
Specification: CAM-ADJ. OFF

- Accelerate vehicle in 1st gear from standstill.

With engine speed between 2000 and 5100 RPM (display field 1) and engine load above 58.0% (display field 2), camshaft adjustment must be active.

Specification (display field 3): CAM-ADJ. ON

- Also observe indication in display field 4.
Specification without adjustment: -3.0 to 3.0° KW
Specification with adjustment: 20.0 to 30.0° KW

Note: Display field 4 indicates if the camshaft is actually being adjusted.

- Press button -3- (VAG1551) or up arrow button (VAG 1552).






Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

- This measuring value block is valid for camshaft adjustment, cylinder bank 2:
- Observe indication in display field 3.
Specification: CAM-ADJ. OFF

- Accelerate vehicle in 1st gear from standstill.

With engine speed between 2000 and 5100 RPM (display field 1) and engine load above 58.0% (display field 2), camshaft adjustment must be active.

Specification (display field 3): CAM - ADJ. ON
Also observe indication in display field 4.
Specification without adjustment: -3.0 to 3.0° KW
Specification with adjustment: 20.0 to 30.0° KW

Note: Display field 4 indicates if the camshaft actually being adjusted.

- Press (arrow) button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End output" function 06 and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.


If display field 4 indicates an adjustment value outside of specified range, the following malfunctions may be present:
The solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment are shifting oil pressure correctly to the relevant mechanical camshaft adjuster, but the adjuster cannot reach its end position (e.g. difficulty of movement).
- Replace camshaft adjuster(s).

If display field 3 and/or 4 indicates no adjustment
Replace camshaft adjuster(s).
