Idle speed, checking

NOTE:
- Idle speed, ignition timing and CO content cannot be adjusted.
- Idle speed is maintained by the throttle valve control module.
- CO content is maintained and adjusted by Oxygen Sensor (O2S) control. Malfunctions in O2S control are recognized by On Board Diagnostic (OBD) and stored in DTC memory.

Special tools and equipment
VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3 adapter cable

Checking conditions
- Exhaust system free of leaks
- All electrical consumers switched off (radiator coolant fan must not run during test)
- A/C switched off
- Automatic transmission selector lever in "P" or "N" position
- Throttle valve in Closed Throttle Position (CTP); for Accelerator Pedal (AP) cable adjustment:
- The cruise control system must function properly.
- Engine coolant temperature at least 85°C (185°F) See VAG1551 scan tool function 08, display group 004, display field 3

Checking
- Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (with engine running at idle), Testing and Inspection
- Check DTC memory, if necessary repair malfunction, and then erase DTC memory.
- Leave VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool connected.
- Continue running engine at idle.

NOTE:
After selecting function 04, the ECM initiates the following:
- EVAP canister purge regulator valve is closed
- A/C compressor is switched off

- Do not continue check until engine coolant temperature is above 85°C (185°F).
- Briefly raise engine speed (acceleration burst) and let engine run at idle for another 2 minutes.
- Compare display with specified values (display fields 1-4):

If the specifications are attained:
- Press -C- button.
- Press buttons -0-, -5- and -6- to input display group number 56 (056), and press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06, and press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Conduct road test and repeat check.

WARNING!
When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle, NEVER hold the scan tool or other test equipment in your hands or lap while in motion. Objects between you and the airbag increase the risk of injury in an accident.
During a test drive in an airbag-equipped vehicle, test equipment must always be fastened to and operated from the rear seat by a second technician.

- Check readiness code. If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory has been erased, or ECM was disconnected, generate new readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
