6 - Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch -F125-
- Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
7 - Sensor for transmission RPM -G182-
- Records the transmission input speed
- Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
8 - Transmission vehicle speed sensor -G38-
- Records the transmission output speed
- Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
9 - Tiptronic switch -F189-
- Location: The Tiptronic switch is integrated in the printed circuit for the symbol insert in the cover on the selector mechanism.
- Is only installed in shift mechanisms with tiptronic function.
- It consists of 3 Hall sensors, actuated by magnets.
- The switch can be checked in read measured value block and in the electrical check
- If the switch malfunctions the gear selector symbol insert with integral printed circuit must be replaced
10 - Shift lock solenoid -N110-
- Can be checked electrically and via reading measured value block
11 - Throttle Position Sensor-G69-
- The throttle position signal is transmitted to the transmission control module via the engine control module. The signal can only be checked in measured value block. If the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) indicates a fault in the throttle position sensor, also perform a On Board Diagnostic (OBD) for the engine control module.
12 - Cruise control switch -E45-
- Can be checked in the electrical check
13 - Starting interlock relay -J207-
14 - Transmission Range (TR) selector lever display -Y6-
- If all segments of selector lever position indicator light up together or
- Selector lever position indicator does not light up indicate that the transmission is in emergency running mode
15 - Kickdown switch -F8-
- Can be checked electrically and via reading measured value block
- When removing and installing kickdown switch, remove and install the accelerator pedal cable, and adjust afterward
- Adjusting throttle cable
16 - Brake light switch -F-
- Can be checked electrically and via reading measured value block

Fig. 1 Location of automatic transmission control module -J217-

The control module is located in front of the right-hand seat under the carpet in footwell.

Fig. 2 Removing automatic transmission control module -J217-
- Loosen carpet and fold up.
- Unclip control module from box -arrows-
- Release multi-pin connector, then pull connector off control module.

Fig. 3 Installing automatic transmission control module -J217-

- Place multi-pin connector on transmission control module connector housing -1-, swing in -2- and lock -3-.

Fig. 4 Engine control module

Location: The control module is located in left plenum chamber.

Fig. 5 Data Link Connector (DLC)

Location: The Data Link Connector (DLC) is located under driver's knee bar to left of steering wheel.

Fig. 6 Valve body

Location: The valve body is bolted to the underside of transmission housing inside the oil pan.

The solenoid valves -N88-, -N89-, -N90-, -N91-, -N92-, -N93- and -N94- are attached to the valve body.

A differentiation is made between two types of transmissions:
- Transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E17-, on which the transmission input speed sensor (inductive sensor) is secured to the underside of the valve body.
- Transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E18/2-, on which the transmission input speed sensor (camshaft position sensor) is secured behind valve body at transmission housing.

Fig. 7 Wiring harness with integral transmission fluid temperature sensor -G93-

Location: The transmission fluid temperature sensor -arrow- is located in the wiring harness on valve body.

The valve body must be removed to replace the wiring harness. It is not necessary to remove the transmission.

Fig. 8 Multi-function TR switch -F125-

Location: The multi-function switch -1- is located on left of transmission; Multi-pin connector for multi-function switch -2-.

Fig. 9 Transmission vehicle speed sensor -G38-

Location: The transmission vehicle speed sensor is located on rear right of transmission.

Fig. 10 Sensor for transmission RPM -G182-

Installation location:

On transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E17-, the sensor for transmission RPM (inductive sensor) is secured to the underside of the valve body (see illustration). On these transmissions the sensor is an inductive sensor.

On transmissions with hydraulic regulation -E18/2-, the sensor for transmission RPM -A- is secured behind valve body at transmission housing. On these transmissions the sensor is a hall effect sensor.

Fig. 11 Shift lock solenoid -N110-

Location: The shift lock solenoid is located in the selector lever housing -arrow-.

Fig. 12 Cruise control system switch -E45-

Location: Cruise control switch is located on steering column switch.

Fig. 13 Kickdown switch -F8-

Location: Kickdown switch (arrow) is integrated into accelerator cable and is located on bulk head in engine compartment.

Removing and installing kickdown switch
- Remove the accelerator cable to remove and install the kickdown switch, then reinstall cable and adjust.

NOTE: On engines with electronic power control (EPC), the Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G79; sender -2- for accelerator position takes over the functions of the kick-down switch. If the Engine Control Module (ECM), throttle valve control module or throttle position sensor are replaced, the kick-down switch position must be learned again.

Fig. 14 Brake light switch -F-

Location: Brake light switch is located on pedal cluster.

Fig. 15 Starting interlock relay -J207-

Location: Relay is located on relay plate below dash panel, left.

Relay is marked with number "204" -arrow-.

Fig. 16 Selector lever position display -Y6-

Location: In instrument cluster

Fig. 17 Throttle position (TP) sensor -G69-

Location: The throttle position sensor is located in the throttle valve control module -J338- (arrow).

- Engine Control Module (ECM) must be adapted to throttle valve control module if the control module is replaced.

On TDI engines, the Throttle Position (TP) Sensor -G79- takes over the function of the TP sensor -G69-.
