01V Transmission
The automatic transmission is controlled electro-hydraulically. The term "On Board Diagnostic (OBD)" relates specifically to the electronic and electrical part of the control system.

Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- safety functions
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- receives information from components that effect gear selection and passes this information on to solenoid valves that control the shift valves in the valve body.
In the "Dynamic Shift Program (DSP)" the control module reacts to the current driving conditions (e.g. ascending or descending hills, trailer towing) and the driver's style of driving (e.g. sporty driving style) and selects the shift points accordingly.
The control module is equipped with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, so that in the event of an electronic/electrical malfunction or open circuit the malfunction can be determined quickly. Malfunctions are detected by electrical signals and are stored as DTCs in DTC memory.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) recognition by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-:
The control module recognizes DTCs during vehicle operation and stores them in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table: refer to "Diagnostic Charts at Testing and Inspection". Testing and Inspection This information will remain available even if the system voltage fails.
The control module distinguishes between faults present (permanent) and temporary malfunctions (sporadic).
If a DTC is no longer present after a certain period or a lengthy drive, it will be converted to a sporadic malfunction.
A permanent DTC will also be converted to sporadic if DTC memory is not erased after repairs.
Sporadically occurring malfunctions will be identified when DTC memory is checked using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) by "/SP," which appears on the right of the display. If the printer is switched ON, the print-out will show "sporadic DTC" after the identification of the malfunction.
If the sporadic malfunction does not occur again after a certain period of time or a lengthy drive, the DTC in Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory will be erased.
Safety functions of Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-
If malfunctions occur while driving, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- can activate a back-up function or "emergency running" program which can affect the operation and smoothness of the gearshifts.
In emergency running mode with the control module functioning, all segments in the selector lever position display in the instrument panel will light up.
In emergency running mode with a faulty control module, there will be no display in the selector lever position display.
The transmission will operate in emergency running mode until the malfunction is no longer recognized by the TCM over a predetermined period of time.

VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST):
The possibilities offered by On Board Diagnostic (OBD) can only be fully exploited with operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer" of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).
Functions which the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) can register or perform, refer to "List of Selectable Functions" at Testing and Inspection, Description of On-Board Diagnostics. Testing and Inspection
Electrical malfunctions that affect vehicle performance can be determined using the VAG 1551 scan tool.
