Flanged Shaft Oil Seals (Left), Replacing (Transmission Installed)
Special tools and auxiliary items
^ Extractor lever VW 681
^ Press piece VW 195

Removing
- Only loosen axle shaft/wheel hub nut and wheel bolts when vehicle is standing on its own wheels.
- Raise vehicle
- Remove wheel.
- Remove axle shaft
- Place pan under transmission.
- Remove flanged shaft cone head bolt with VAG 1669 or (commercially available) 6 mm socket, counter-hold.
- Remove flanged shaft with spring.
- Pull out flanged shaft oil seal with VW 681.

Installing





- Drive new axle seal in to stop, ensure seal is being driven in straight.
- Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
- Install flanged shaft with spring, support ring, tapered ring and circlip.





- Both lugs -2- on axle gear for speedometer sender must engage between support ring tabs -1-.
- Install axle shaft.
- Install wheel.

Tightening torques
Flanged shaft to transmission (tapered bolt): 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
Axle shaft to transmission M8: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Axle shaft to transmission M10: 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.)
Axle shaft to wheel hub M14 bolt: 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) + 180°
Always replace bolt
Axle shaft to wheel hub M 16 bolt: 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.) + 180°
Always replace bolt
Wheel bolts to wheel hub: 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
Upper transverse link to swing arm: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
