With Manufacturer's Scan Tool

Camshaft adjustment,checking
Only vehicles with engine codes: AWP, AWW
The adjustment of the camshaft occurs dependent upon load and engine RPM. The electrical valve for camshaft adjustment directs oil pressure to the camshaft adjuster (mechanical adjustment device), which then moves the camshaft.

Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
^ VAG 1551 scan tool or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3
^ Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or multimeter V.A.G 1715
^ Adapter set V.A.G 1594
^ V.A.G 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster

Checking activation
- The activation of the solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment must be checked first via the Output Diagnostic Test Mode.

If activation is OK:

Checking solenoid valve

- Measure resistance between solenoid valve contacts. Specification: 10 to 18 ohms (room temperature)

If valve is not faulty:
- Check function of camshaft adjuster.

Checking function of camshaft adjuster
Test conditions
^ Coolant temperature must be at least 85°C, = display group 04, display zone 3.

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool ((V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select engine control module with "Address word" 01. Connecting scan tool and selecting engine control module.

Indicated on display:
- Press keys 0 and 4 for the function "Introduction of basic setting" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display:
- Press keys 0, 9 and 4 for "Display group number 94" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = Display zones)

Engine code AWW
- Set engine speed to 1800 to 2200 RPM using speed regulator V.A.G 1788/10.
- Maintain the engine speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until the display in display zone 3 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to maintain the speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until the specification "Syst. OK" appears in display zone 3.

If the display indicates as described:
- Remove the engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.

Engine code AWP
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to wide-open position.
The engine speed is increased by the control module to approx. 2300 RPM.

- Hold both brake pedal and accelerator pedal depressed until the display in display zone 3 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue to hold both brake pedal and accelerator pedal depressed until the result of the function test is displayed in display zone 3. Specification: "Syst. OK"

If the display indicates as described:
- Release brake pedal and gas pedal.
Continuation for all vehicles
- Press-> key.

Indicated on display:
- Press keys 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q key.
- Switch off ignition.

If "Syst. nOK" is indicated in display field 3, check DTC memory.
The following malfunction can occur for DTC 17927:
The camshaft adjuster solenoid valve correctly switches oil pressure to the mechanical camshaft adjuster but it cannot reach its end position (e.g. tight/partially seized).
- Replace camshaft adjuster.
- Check DTC memory.
- Read out readiness code.
- If the DTC memory has been erased or the engine control module separated from the permanent positive, the readiness code must be generated again.
- Repeat the functional check.

If specified value still is not obtain:
- Replace engine control module.
