- Remove wheel bearing housing.

- Remove corrosion and dirt from wheel bearing housing hole, if necessary.
- Press in onto stop.

- Press in onto stop.
- Install wheel bearing housing.

If there is a hand pump VAG 1389/1 available in the dealership it can be converted to a foot pump.
To do this use the conversion set VAG 1389/3.

^ 3 - Kukko 17/2 Separating device
- Loosen hex bolt for drive shaft when vehicle is standing on its wheels (otherwise danger of accident).
- Remove wheel and raise vehicle.





- Pull out securing clip -1- and unhook parking brake cable from brake caliper.

Note: Do not damage parking brake boot when removing and installing.

- Remove brake carrier and brake caliper and tie to body with wire.
- Remove disc brake and cover plate.
- Disconnect ABS vehicle speed sensor out from wheel bearing housing.





- Remove bolt -2- for control arm -1-.
- Pull wheel bearing housing off drive shaft and swing out of the way.

Note: Place transmission jack VAG 13831A underneath (danger of accident from falling parts when pulling out the wheel hub and the wheel bearing).

Pulling out hub





- Install separating device -1- between wheel bearing housing and hub and pretighten.
Installation position: Flat sides of plates face to wheel hub.
- Install support-2-, hollow piston cylinder -3- with pull rod and special nut -4-.
- Hold appliance firmly and pull wheel hub out.

Pulling out wheel bearing





- Install press piece -1- with shoulder to bearing, press sleeve -2- with four stepped internal diameters to wheel bearing housing, hollow piston cylinder -3- with pull rod and special nut -4-.
- Operate pump and pull out the wheel bearing.

Pulling bearing inner race off hub





- Install separating device -1- behind bearing inner race -2-.
Installing position: Chamfer on plates faces to bearing inner race.
- Install support -3- and hollow piston cylinder -4- with pull rod, screw on special nut -5- and pull off bearing inner race.

Pressing in wheel bearing
Installation position: The larger internal diameter of the wheel bearing faces outward.





- Install wheel bearing -1-, press piece -2- (install with collar in bearing) and hollow piston cylinder -3- with pull rod on wheel bearing housing.
- Install press piece -4- with chamfers to wheel bearing housing and special nut-5on inside.
- Press wheel bearing in by operating the pump.

Pressing in wheel hub





- Install hub -1- and hollow-piston cylinder -2- with pull rod on wheel bearing.
- Install press piece -3- with shoulder to special nut -4- on inside.
- Press in hub by operating the pump.

Further assembly work is carried out in the reverse order

Steel wheel bearing housing, removing and installing
Removing
- Remove hex bolt for drive shaft.
- Remove wheels.





- Remove securing bolts -1- from brake caliper.
- Remove brake caliper and hang up on body.
- Take off disc brake.
- Remove bolts for splash plate.
- Take off splash plate.
- Disconnect ABS vehicle speed sensor out from wheel bearing housing





- Remove coupling rod from anti-roll bar.

- Remove bolt -A- for track rod.
- Mark installation position of eccentric washer for bolt -B-.
- Remove bolt -B-.





- Remove bolt -2- for control arm -1
- Pull wheel bearing housing off drive shaft.

Installing
Install in reverse order
- Install wheels and tighten
After installing check position of steering wheel during a test drive.
If steering wheel is not in straight ahead position, the front axle tracking must be checked!
Tightening torques:
Upper control arm to wheel bearing housing
Lower control arm to wheel bearing housing
Drive shaft to wheel hub
Track rod to wheel bearing housing
Coupling rod to anti-roll bar
Splash plate to wheel bearing housing
Brake caliper to wheel bearing housing

Bonded rubber mounting for steel wheel bearing housing, removing and installing

The bonded rubber mounting in the wheel bearing housing is comprised of two parts. Removing is undertaken in two work sequences.

Removing
Pressing out first bonded rubber mounting
- Bend bonded rubber mounting plate collar over slightly.





- Install separating device 3292 and tighten spindle.
The tool cutters must be positioned exactly between the bonded rubber mounting collar and the wheel bearing housing.
- Insert pin 3293/1.





- Install tool 3349 so that the cutters slide exactly between the bonded rubber mounting and the wheel bearing housing.
- Turn spindle -2- until the bonded rubber mounting lifts slightly off the wheel bearing housing.
- Now tighten bolts -1-.





- Install bridge 3292/2.
- Press one of the bonded rubber mountings out by turning the hex bolt -1-.

Pressing out second bonded rubber mounting





- Insert thrust piece 3349/1 and use spindle from 3292.
- Pull bonded rubber mounting out by turning spindle.

Note: Make sure that the tool cutters lie completely on the shoulder of the bonded rubber mounting while pulling out.

Install bonded rubber mounting into wheel bearing housing
Installing the bonded rubber mounting is completed in one sequence.





- Install both bonded rubber mountings together with tool 3292/3.
- Pull in bonded rubber mountings by turning the spindle.
