Technical Background
May be caused by torque converter internal oil seal failure (no external leaks).
Production Solution
Optimized shaft seal ring in the torque converter as of transmission serial numbers listed in table below
Service
Identify the transmission and record serial number on 5 and 6 speed Transmission Concern Form, see Repair Manual 5 Spd. Automatic Transmission 01 L, 01V General, Technical Data, Transmission identification.
NOTE:
The following tests must be performed and recorded before repairs.
- Engine running and at operating temperature.
- Check transmission fluid level, and Only if necessary, adjust per Repair Manual Group 37 - Automatic Transmission - Controls, Housing, ATF level, checking and topping off.
- Connect the VAS 5051 or 5052 diagnostic tool.
- From VAS 5051 VAS 5052 Start-up screen, select "Vehicle self diagnosis".
- Select Diagnosis function "02-Gearbox electronics".
Similar Screen Appears.
- Select diagnosis function "008 - Coding (Service 22).
- Select Measured Value Block 7.
NOTE: Vehicle must be driven in each gear for a minimum of 20 seconds.
- Test drive the vehicle (in gears 3-4-5) observe and record measured value block via guided function or self-diagnosis.
- Compared to screen print, when the torque converter clutch is in CONTROL and CLOSED modes:
If readings of converter clutch status (field 3) and respective allowable converter clutch slip (field 4) differ from ranges specified in the screen print AFTER 20 seconds of driving in each gear, the torque converter must be replaced.
Only remove the gearbox and replace the torque converter if the values differ.
- Refer to Repair Manual Group 37, Transmission removing and installing for transmission removal instructions.
- Refer to Repair Manual Group 32, Torque Converter for torque converter replacement instructions.
- 01 L, 01V transmissions, built after serial codes listed in table, are fitted with an improved torque converter.
NOTE: Care must be taken to properly install and seat the torque converter to the transmission pump. Failure to do so will result in immediate damage.
Tip: It is not necessary to receive an authorization number from the Technicians Helpline for the repair described in this Bulletin.
Attach VAS 5051 / VAS 5052 print-out to repair order. Warranty claims received without VAS 5051 / 5052 print-outs may be denied.
