Transmission Speed Sensor: Service and Repair


Speedometer sender and drive wheel, replacing
Speedometer sender, replacing
(Transmission installed)
- Observe general repair instructions.





- Pull connector off sender -A-.
- Press retaining clip down, turn sender sideways and pull out upwards.
- When installing replace seal -B-.
- Handle sender carefully. If damaged it is possible that the speedometer will not indicate exactly.

Speedometer drive wheel, replacing
(Transmission in vehicle)

Special tools and workshop equipment required





- VW 295 Drift
- VW681 Extractor
- 2062 Punch
- T10037 Puller
- VAG1331 Torque wrench
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Removing
- Turn steering to left onto full lock stop.
- If fitted, remove cover above left-hand drive shaft.
- Disconnect drive shaft from flanged shaft.
- Place drip tray underneath.





- Remove flange shaft, to do this screw puller T10037 onto differential cover (arrow).
- Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.
- Remove speedometer sender.
Remove speedometer drive wheel:





- Press retaining clips in direction of arrows with a screwdriver.
- Remove drive wheel by levering out, alternating between sides.

Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence, when doing this note the following:
Installation position:





The drive peg of the drive wheel -A- faces to seal -B- and locates in the groove of the differential.
The retaining clips (arrows) locate in the circumferential groove in differential.
Always replace seal -B- and circlip -C-.
- Knock flange shaft in with drift VW 295.
- Check transmission oil.

Tightening torques
Drive shaft to flanged shaft M8 45 Nm
Drive shaft to flanged shaft M10 70 Nm
Cover plate above drive shaft to transmission 20 Nm
