Battery, Removing And Installing


CAUTION!
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows.



Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed







- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)

Battery in engine compartment, removing

- Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.







- Turn clip -arrow- 1/2 turn and remove battery cover -1- (where applicable).
- Disconnect battery cables in the following order:


CAUTION!
Do not loosen or remove ground strap from body Disconnect from battery only








- First disconnect battery ground strap -2- from battery negative terminal.
- Then disconnect battery positive cable from battery positive terminal -1-.







- Unclip fuse holder in direction of -arrow- and tilt forward.


NOTE: Removal of fuse holder is not always necessary, but does improve access.







1 - Lower flange retainer
2 - Hold-down clamp must press onto lower flange
3 - Hex bolt M8 X 30 (tightening torque 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.))
4 - Mounting base

- Remove hex bolt -3-.
- Remove battery hold-down clamp -2- and remove battery upwards.

Installing
To ensure proper battery fitment, install only genuine VW replacement batteries and adhere to following work sequence:


NOTE:
- For vehicles > 04.99, height of battery lower flange is 19 mm.
- For vehicles 04.99 >, height of battery lower flange is 10.5mm.







- Install battery so that the lug of the hold-down clamp -1- engages in the center cutout of the battery lower flange -arrow
- With ignition and electrical consumers switched off, connect battery in the following sequence:







- First connect battery positive cable to battery positive terminal -1- and tighten to 5 Nm.
- Then connect the battery ground strap -2- to battery negative terminal and tighten to 5 Nm.


NOTE:
- Battery posts and terminals must no longer be greased.
- In order to prevent damage to the battery housing, battery terminals must be placed on battery posts without using force (by hand only).
- Battery post/terminal nut -arrow- tightening torque: 5 Nm (44 in lb)
- Additional battery post/terminals, tightening torque: 6 Nm (53 in lb).







- Install hold-down clamp and tighten M8 x 30 bolt -arrow- to 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.).
- Clip in fuse holder.
- After installing, ensure battery is seated securely.


CAUTION!
If battery is not secured properly, the following will result:
- Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage.
- Battery cell and plate damage.
- Electrolyte leakage due to battery case damage.
- Poor collision safety.



- Install battery cover.

Second battery under driver's seat, removing







- Operate lever -1- and slide driver's seat forwards onto stop.
- Lift lever -2- up and slide seat completely forwards passed stop.
- Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers
- Disconnect battery in the following sequence:







- First disconnect battery ground strap from battery negative terminal -2-.
- Then disconnect battery positive cable from battery positive terminal -1-.

- Remove hex bolt -3-.
- Remove hold-down clamp -2- and remove battery upwards.

Installing


WARNING!
Do Not exchange/replace 175 mm tall batteries with 190 mm tall batteries



To ensure proper battery fitment, install only genuine VW replacement batteries and adhere to following work sequence:


NOTE:
- For vehicles > 04.99, height of battery lower flange is 19mm. A 63Ah/300A battery is installed in these vehicles.
- For vehicles 04.99 > , height of battery lower flange is 10.5mm. A 60Ah/280A battery is installed in these vehicles.


- Install hold-down clamp and tighten bolt to 20 Nm.
- With ignition and electrical consumers switched off, connect battery in the following sequence:







- First connect battery positive cable to battery positive terminal -1- and tighten to 5 Nm.
- Then connect battery ground strap to battery negative terminal and tighten to 5 Nm.
- After installing, ensure battery is seated securely.


CAUTION!
