Door Windows, May Separate from Window Regulator Clamps

Technical Background

Door windows may separate from window regulator clamps under certain operating conditions. In order to provide additional retention capability for the window / window regulator clamp assembly, perform the following repair procedure outlined in this bulletin.

NOTE:
Perform bulletin on both doors even if only one door window has separated from window regulator clamps.

Service

While performing this Technical Bulletin:

^ Check if vehicle you are working on is equipped with original plastic window clamps.

If original plastic clamps are installed or clamps are broken:

^ Perform Technical Bulletin 2010640 or later, You must clean glass, scuff rubber isolators and apply adhesive as described in this bulletin when reinstalling the window glass.

This will ensure the Customer's vehicle has new style clamps with the window glass bonded to the rubber isolator as described here.

If new style cast clamps are installed:

^ Continue with this Bulletin.

Tip:
See Repair Manual, Group 64 Glass, Window regulators, for instruction concerning removal, installation and adjustment of door glass.





Remove both front door interior trim panels to access window regulator clamps, see Repair Manual Group 70, Interior Trim, Door Trim.

^ Loosen window regulator clamp bolts but DO NOT remove.





Care must be taken to properly secure the glass in the window frame once the window regulator clamps are separated from the window. This will prevent window from falling into door.

^ Pull glass free of rubber isolators and remove glass.





^ Remove rubber isolators, see Repair Manual Group 64, Glass, Window regulators, Door windows.





^ Scuff each rubber isolator, where they contact glass, with 120 grit sand paper to remove gloss.

^ Clean scuffed area with 3M(R) General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner Part No: 08987. See -> Required Parts and Tools





^ " Apply a 10 mm diameter spot of 3M(R) Channel Bonding and Sidelite Adhesive, Part No. 08641, see MACROBUTTON MB_EditRef -> MACROBUTTON MB_EditRef -> -> Required Parts and Tools, to one side of the rubber each isolator.





Tip:
Adhesive application tool is available locally.

^ Reinstall isolators into window regulator clamps.

^ Clean glass where it inserts into window regulator clamps with 3M(R) General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner Part No: 08987.

^ Install glass into window regulator clamps, see Repair Manual Group 64, Glass, Window regulators, Door window adjusting.

^ Apply Loctite 242(R) (obtain from local supplier) to exposed bolt threads.

^ Tighten each window regulator clamp bolt to 11 Nm (97 in. lbs.).

^ Close and clean window.

Tip:
Do Not operate window for 30 minutes. This will allow adhesive to cure.
