Steering column "A", removing and installing

Removing

The steering column is supplied complete, less steering lock housing

Steering locking house comes as a replacement part.

Servicing is not possible.

Steering lock housing can be transferred.

Removing and installing steering lock housing, Refer to Steering Column Lock, Service and Repair

WARNING:

Before removing steering wheel the following conditions must be met:
^ Ground strap disconnected from battery.
^ Wheels must be in straight ahead position.
If these instructions are not observed it is possible that the airbag system may fail later!

- Removing airbag module for four spoke steering wheel, Refer to Restraint System, Air Bag, Service and Repair.
- Removing airbag module for three spoke steering wheel, Refer to Restraint System, Air Bag, Service and Repair.
- Turn wheels to straight ahead position.
- Remove steering wheel
- Remove lower storage compartment.
- Remove carpeting.





Removing trim for four spoke steering
- Remove bolts -1-.
- Take off handle for height and reach adjustment.
- Unscrew bolts -2-, -3- and -4-.
- Take off lower steering column switch trim.





- Take off upper steering column switch trim -1-.
- Separate connection -1-.





- Release locking tabs -arrows- and pull coil connector with slip ring off steering column switch.

This illustration shows a slip ring in a vehicle without electronic stabilization program -ESP-





Vehicles with electronic stabilization program -ESP-
Vehicles with ESP are also equipped with steering angle sensor -G85-. It is Installed in housing -1- together with slip ring and coil connector.

A description of the design and function of the ESP is found in self-study program No. 204
- Check that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
- Position wheels to straight-ahead position, and remove steering wheel.





- Position steering angle sensor -G85- in center position;
A yellow spot must be visible in hole -1-.
The marks -arrow- must align.





- Lift hooks -arrows- carefully and pull off steering angle sensor.

The continuation of the work sequence is valid for all vehicles





- Remove plastic cover -1- over shear head bolts.
- Release tie wrap.





- Remove bolt for steering column switch and take off steering column switch.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

The ignition key removal lock cable must be disconnected on vehicles with automatic transmission.
- Move selector lever to position "P".
- Turn ignition key -C- to position "Ignition on".





Position "B"
- Press wire clip -1- upward or downward according to installation position and pull ignition lock cable -2- out at same time.
- Remove plastic nuts -1-.





- Remove cover -A-.





- Remove joint bolt -1- from steering shaft joint.
- Remove universal joint steering gear.

Securing steering column before removal

An assembly aid is required so that the upper and lower parts of the steering column do not pull apart when removing from steering gear.

If upper and lower parts of the steering column are pulled too far apart or pushed too close together the splines will separate.

It is possible that rattling noises may occur later on if the splines are not in their original installation position.

- Push or pull steering column together or apart until the hole is visible.





- Insert a clip in the hole.





A - Steering column
Manufacturer: Nacam. Vehicles up to my 01.00
- Remove nut - 3 -.
- Remove hex. bolt -1 -.
- Remove hex. bolts - 2 -and remove steering column.

^ 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
3. Hex nut
^ 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
4. Cross member for steering column

Installing steering column, manufacturer: Nacam. Vehicles up to my 01.00





New steering columns, which are delivered as replacement parts, are secured with a transportation securing device - 6 -

This transportation device - 6 -must be removed after installing steering column in vehicle.

The shear head bolt -10 - and the Pin -11- must be installed on new steering columns, which have been supplied as a replacement part.
- Tighten shear head bolt - 10 - until head shears off
- Install steering column with preassembled steering lock housing to cross member
- Install hex bolts - 5 -
- Now insert hex bolt -12 -.
- Install nut - 13 - and tighten to 10 Nm.
- Now tighten bolts - 5 - to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Now remove transportation securing device - 6 -.
- Install universal joint/shaft on steering pinion -9-.
- Tighten bolt - 8 - to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

B - Steering column
Manufacturer: Krupp Presta. Vehicles from my 02.00
- Remove nut - 3 -.
- Remove hex. bolt -1 -.
- Remove hex. bolts - 2 -and remove steering column.

^ 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
3. Hex nut
^ 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
4. Cross member for steering column

Installing steering column, manufacturer: Krupp Presta. Vehicles from my 02.00





New steering columns, which are delivered as replacement parts, are secured with a transportation securing device - 6 -.

This transportation device - 6 - must be removed after installing steering column in vehicle.

The shear head bolt -10 - and the Pin -11 - must be installed on new steering columns, which have been supplied as a replacement part.
- Tighten shear head bolt - 10 - until head shears off.
- Install steering column with preassembled steering lock housing to cross member.
- Install hex. bolts - 5 -.

When a steering column from Messrs. Presta is installed, the bolts must be secured with locking fluid D 000 600.

Identifying the steering column, Refer to Steering Column, Application and ID
- Now insert hex bolt -12 -.
- Install nut - 13 - and tighten to 10 Nm.
- Now tighten bolts - 5 - to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Now remove transportation securing device - 6 -.
- Install universal joint/shaft on steering pinion -9-.
- Tighten bolt - 8 - to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

Vehicles with automatic transmission

The ignition key removal lock cable must be additionally disconnected on vehicles with automatic transmission.

- Move selector lever to position "P", if necessary.

Ignition key -C- must be in position -B- "Ignition on".





- Slide ignition lock cable -2- on steering lock housing -1- until wire clip engages.
- Check function of ignition key lock.
