Ignition Coil, Checking

Ignition Coil, Checking

NOTE:
- Ignition coils and power output stage are one component and are installed in ignition transformer.
- Primary resistance of ignition coils cannot be measured.
- Secondary resistance should be tested only with ignition wires connected to ignition coils. To do this, measurements must be made between spark plug connectors of respective ignition coil. This measurement also measures the interference-suppression resistors of all ignition wires.

Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1527 voltage test lamp
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Test requirements

- The respective fuses of Ignition Coil -N152- must be OK
- Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- must be OK, check
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 volts.
- All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster must be switched off.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
- If vehicle is equipped with an A/C system, it must be switched off.
- Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.
- Engine speed (RPM) sensor must be OK, checking. Testing and Inspection
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors must be OK, checking. Testing and Inspection
- Ignition switched off.

Test sequence

- Disconnect 5-pin connector -1- from Ignition Coil -N152- -2-.

Checking ignition coils with ignition wires
- Disconnect spark plug connectors.

Vehicles with engine code AHA

- Measure resistance between the two spark plug connectors of an ignition coil.
Specified value: 18 to 25 kohms

Vehicles with engine code ATQ

- Measure resistance between the two spark plug connectors of an ignition coil.
Specified value: 16 to 27 kohms

Continuation for all vehicles

- Repeat test on other two ignition coils.

If specified values are not obtained:
- Disconnect ignition wires from ignition coils.

Vehicles with engine code AHA
- Test resistance of ignition wires.
Specified value: 4 to 6 kohms

Vehicles with engine code ATQ
- Test resistance of ignition wires.
Specified value: 3 to 7 kohms

Continuation for all vehicles
If specified values are not obtained:
- Replace the respective spark plug connectors with the ignition wires.
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If specified values are obtained:

- Check secondary resistance of ignition coils.
Specified value: 8 to 14 kohms

If specified values are not obtained:
- Replace Ignition Coil -N152-.
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If specified values are obtained:

Checking voltage supply

- Pull connectors -1- off connection -2- of all fuel injectors.

- Connect multimeter to terminals 1 + 2 of the disconnected connector for voltage measurement.
- Operate starter
Specified value: at least 11.5 V
- Switch ignition off.

If there is no voltage:
- Check wire between 5-pin connector terminal 1 and relay carrier for open circuits according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Check for open circuit in wire between 5-pin connector terminal 2 and Ground (GND) according to wiring diagram.
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If specified values are obtained:

Checking activation

- Pull connectors -1- off connection -2- of all fuel injectors.

- Connect V.A.G 1527 diode test lamp to terminals 2 + 3 of connector.
- Operate starter and test ignition signal from Engine Control Module (ECM).
LED should flicker.
- Repeat test between terminals 2 + 4 and 2 + 5.

If LED does not flicker:
- Connect test box to control module wiring harness. connect test box for wiring test. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test

Vehicles with engine code AHA

- Check wires between test box and 5-pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 3 + socket 71
Terminal 4 + socket 78
Terminal 5 + socket 70
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

Vehicles with engine code ATQ
- Check wires between test box and 5-pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
Terminal 3 + socket 102
Terminal 4 + socket 103
Terminal 5 + socket 94
Wire resistance: max. 1.5 ohms

Continuation for all vehicles
- Also check wires for short circuit to each other.
Specified value: Infinite ohms

If no errors are found in wires and there was voltage between terminals 1+2:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

If voltage supply and activation are OK:
- Replace Ignition Coil -N152-.
- Erase DTC memory of Engine Control Module (ECM). Diagnostic mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data. Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
- Generate readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
