Wheel Hub and Bearing, with 17", 18" and 18" Plus Wheels

Wheel Hub and Bearing, with 17", 18" and 18" Plus Wheels

During the entire work procedure, always ensure proper seating of tools and components (wheel bearing/wheel hub).

Always place engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) beneath wheel bearing housing during entire work procedure (danger of accident if parts fall off).

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine and transmission jack (VAG 1383 A) with universal transmission support (VAG 1359/2)

Hydraulic cylinder (VAS 6178)

Assembly tool (T10205)

Separating tool (3 - Kukko 15/3)

Hollow piston cylinder (VAS 6179)

Pliers for circlips, 180 mm internal circlip (VAS 5498)

Pressure gauge w/connection (VAS 6179/1)

Removing

CAUTION!
Before starting work, stabilizer bars must be coupled in vehicles with separable stabilizer bars. Otherwise, there is the danger of injury caused by unintentional separation.

- Remove drive axle. Refer to --> [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.

- Install upper control arm on wheel bearing housing.

- Secure brake disc using a wheel bolt - arrow -.

- Remove brake caliper and secure to body with wire.

- Remove brake disc and backing plate.

- Unclip wire for wheel speed sensor from retainer.

- Remove Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensor.

Wheel Hub, Pulling Out

- Bolt the grips (T10205/1) to the wheel hub with the wheel bolts - A -.

Wheel bolts - 2 - must not protrude on rear side of attachments (T10205/1).

2 Wheel bolts
3 (T10205/1)

- Mount tools as depicted in illustration.

The hydraulic press (VAS 6178) - 4 - may only be inserted as shown in the illustration.

If that position is not maintained, damage to the inside of the hydraulic press (VAS 6178) may result.

1. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

2. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)

3. Hydraulic press (VAS 6178) with pressure head (T10205/13)

4. Bell (T10205/2)

5. Gripping pieces (T10205/1)

6. Press piece (T10205/3)

7. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)

8. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

- Pull out wheel hub, hold tool securely.

Wheel Bearing, Pulling Out

- Remove securing ring.

- Mount tools as depicted in illustration.

Please note:

Offset of thrust piece (T10205/6) must point toward rear final drive.

1. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

2. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)

3. Hydraulic press (VAS 6178) with pressure head (T10205/13)

4. Mounting tube (T10205/5)

5. Mount (T10205/4)

6. Thrust pad (T10205/6)

7. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)

8. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

- Pull out wheel bearing while holding device securely.

Pulling Bearing Inner Race Off Wheel Hub

- Install separating tool behind bearing inner ring.

Please note:

Beveled parts of blades face bearing inner ring.

1. Separating tool (3 - Kukko 15/3)

2. Bell (T10205/2)

3. Hydraulic press (VAS 6178) with pressure head (T10205/13)

5. Press piece (T10205/3)

6. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)

7. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

CAUTION!
When pulling off, hold tool so that bearing inner ring points downward (danger of accident if bearing inner ring jumps off at end of pulling process).

- Pull off wheel hub from bearing inner ring.

Wheel Bearing, Pressing In

- Make sure that rubberized sensor ring for ABS - arrow - points toward rear final drive.

If no rubberized ring is visible, check, for example using a paper clip, which of the sides is magnetic. This side must face rear final drive when installed.

- Mount tools as depicted in illustration.

Please note:

Offset of thrust piece (T10205/9) must point toward wheel bearing housing.

1. Threaded rod M20 (T10205/8-1)

2. Threaded nut M20 (T10205/8-2)
