Battery in Engine Compartment, Disconnecting and Connecting
CAUTION!
Risk of injury. Observe warning notes and safety precautions.
Disconnecting
• By disconnecting the negative battery connection (opening the circuit), it is possible to safely work on the electrical system.
• Disconnection of the battery positive terminal is only required for removal of the battery.
- Turn off the ignition and all electrical consumers.
- Open locking mechanism - arrow - and remove battery box cover.
- First, disconnect battery terminal clamp of Ground (GND) wire - 1 - from battery Ground (GND) terminal.
- Then, remove battery terminal clamp of positive wire - 2 - from battery positive terminal.
Connecting
CAUTION!
Observe notes for threaded connections of battery terminals.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• After connecting the battery and switching on the ignition, the ASR/ESP Control Lamp (K155) lights up continuously. Control lamp goes out automatically when vehicle is driven a distance straight ahead at 15 to 20 km/h. This re-activates Steering Angle Sensor (G85).
CAUTION!
When disconnecting and connecting battery, the procedure must be followed as described in the repair information. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
Central battery venting hose must not be kinked, closed and/or damaged. Battery acids pose health risks and are explosive. Carefully route the hose and ensure the battery can vent freely and not into inside of vehicle.
- Connect the positive wire battery terminal clamp - 2 - to the battery positive terminal and tighten the mounting bolt to the specification => [ Specifications ] Specifications.
- Connect the ground wire battery terminal clamp - 1 - to the battery negative terminal and tighten the mounting bolt to the specification => [ Specifications ] Specifications.
