Right Flange/Stub Shaft or Seal

• Do not remove the bolts from the right and left flange shafts or the right stub shaft and left flange shaft at the same time. If the differential bevel gears rotate, it will be difficult to reinstall the bolts.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drift Sleeve (3158)

• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)

Removing

- Remove the right wheel.

- Remove the noise insulation.

- If equipped, remove the drive axle heat shield bolts - arrows - and heat shield.






- Remove the right drive axle.

Vehicles with an Intermediate Shaft:

- After removing the right drive axle - A -, remove the intermediate shaft - B - from the bracket - C - - arrows - and from the transmission stub shaft.






Continuation for all Vehicles:

- Place the drip tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208) under the transmission.

- Remove the stub shaft bolt - arrow - or the flange shaft bolt, depending on equipment.






- Remove the stub shaft or the flange shaft together with the spring.

- Pry out the seal.

Installing

- Lightly lubricate the outer circumference of the new seal.

- Fill the space - arrow - between the sealing and dust lips halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128).






- Install the seal without tilting it, until seated.






- Install the stub shaft or flange shaft.

- Tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm. Push the stub shaft or flange shaft against the transmission so that the bolt engages in the threads.

Vehicles with an Intermediate Shaft:

- Replace the O-ring on the stub shaft.

- Grease the splines on the stub shaft.

• For the correct grease, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Guide the intermediate shaft - B - through the bracket - C - and onto the stub shaft.






- Tighten the intermediate shaft to the bracket bolts - arrows - to specification.

Continuation for all Vehicles:

- Install the right drive axle.

- Install the right wheel.

- Check the fluid level and fill if necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling ] Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling.

- Install the noise insulation.
