INSTALLATION OF NEW CRANKSHAFT REAR SEAL

An improved crankshaft rear seal, p/n 3547000-4, has been introduced for diesel engines. Mandatory new tool (drift 999-5447-1) is required to install the new-type seal.

CAUTION:
Do not use tool 5208 with the new-type seal. Otherwise, you will damage the seal.

The following is a description of the installation procedure, which modifies the service manuals.

METHOD

Pack space between seal lips with grease.

Mount seal on tool 5447 with open side of seal facing out. First, place one edge of seal against tool so that it is positioned at slight angle(1).

Next, work seal onto tool, keeping lips slightly compressed(2).

Note:
Take care not to damage seal lips. Finally, push seal fully home onto tool(3).

Attach handle 1801 to drift.

Ensure crankshaft is cleaned of dirt build-up. Place drift and seal against crankshaft.

Install seal by tapping end of handle with hammer until drift meets crankshaft.
