Vehicle Headliner, Removal




NOTE: This is required for drain tube rerouting and resealing the sunroof frame.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

From front seats:

Manual sunroof
- Remove crank and cover.

Power sunroof
- Remove cover.



Remove:
- sun visor and sun visor holders.
- rear view mirror (push cover to side, use screwdriver to pry downward, remove mirror retainers).



Remove front grab bars. Driver's side: press cover downward and use a screwdriver to pry loose. Remove retaining screws.



Passenger side: pry loose center moulding and remove retaining screws.



From rear seat:

Remove grab bars: Pry loose center moulding and remove retaining screws.

Remove dome light and reading lights on sides (if applicable) Remove two U-shaped plastic retainers from dome light.



Loosen top of B-post panels.
- Remove plugs and screws.

NOTE: Same operation for C-post panel on wagon models.


Remove roof side panels.



Remove rear side quarter panels.
- Remove seat belt bezel.
- Take hold of panel surrounding rear side quarter window and carefully pull to remove plastic clips.
- Pull top portion of quarter panel away from headlining.

"X" shows location of retaining clips.
Remove clips holding rear window moulding onto roof. Use wooden spatula.



Install supports (wood clamps) to prevent headlining from cracking and to avoid finger prints.

SUPPORTS (wooden clamps)

Material: Pine door moulding
Dimensions: Length = 19" Width = 1 1/2" (approx) Thick = 1/4"-3/8"
Make two pairs. Drill holes 2" in from each end for available bolts 1-1/2" long.
Remove joint plate and moulding around sunroof opening. Disconnect roof cloth at roof opening. Heat edge of headlining with a heat gun next to sunroof opening and carefully pull off.

Remove rear seat bottom. (Not on wagon).



Remove rear interior light on wagon.
- Disconnect wires at lamp.



Remove clips behind lamp.
- Turn clips 1/4 turn left or right.


Screw out clips and remove panel on wagon.
- Let wire pass through hole when removing rear roof panel.



Remove rear side roof panels.
- Pull panel straight out.

Position of clips marked by "X".



From front seat, remove A-post panels.

At top:
Remove screw at rear end of panel. Carefully insert a wooden spatula between cover and moulding. Carefully pry out panel until it comes loose. Place hand on joint to prevent damage to retaining brackets (on inside) "X" shows position of clip.
Slide front seats forward and fold backrest rearward. Engage first gear (position P automatic).


Remove moulding at windshield upper edge. Use wooden spatula and press moulding forward.

Remove center plastic clip in rear end of headlining.

Remove clips above rear seat on wagon.
- Turn clips 1/4 turn left or right.


TWO PERSONS: Remove headlining.

Lower headlining and slide dome light through. Remove headlining from rear quarter panels.



Place headlining on front seats. Make sure that headlining is fully supported. Take care not to break. USE WOODEN SUPPORTS AT SUNROOF OPENING!

Remove adhesive tape from inside of headlining.

SEDAN ONLY
TWO PERSONS: Carefully remove the headlining diagonally through the passenger door.


CAUTION:
Take care not to damage the corners.



WAGON ONLY:
- Push headlining forward to unhook headlining at interior light. Let lamp pass through hole.
- Remove headlining through tailgate opening.
