3.Installation of New Motor Mounts

The new mounting gives a different angle for the rubber cushions, which reduce the transmission of vibrations from the engine to the cross member.

The new engine mounts have been introduced in production during MY 1985 from the following chassis numbers:

704-143842 (vehicles manufactured in Belgium, Factory 2) 704-164577 (vehicles manufactured in Sweden, Factory 1)
NOTE: The new motor mounts must not be installed unless Section 1 and 2 in this bulletin have been performed.



Installation

Parts required:

^ Disconnect battery (-)



^ Off-load engine mounts using cradle 9995006-5 and 2x hooks 9995115-4.



^ Loosen 4 bolts securing front axle cross member until they can just be turned by hand.



^ Remove engine undertray.



^ Remove engine mounts.



^ Detach lower steering column joint from steering gear.



^ Place jack beneath front axle cross member.

^ Remove 4 securing bolts.



^ Detach steering rod ends using puller 9995259-0.

^ Disconnect anti-roll bar from control arm.



^ Disconnect control arms from front axle cross member.



^ Place a drip pan beneath steering gear and disconnect hoses from steering gear.
^ Remove axle cross member together with steering gear.
^ Remove jack support plate.

^ Remove steering gear from cross member.

^ Clean cross member.



^ Cut off welded engine mount brackets.

^ Grind welds flush.

CAUTION: DO NOT CUT OR GRIND INTO THE CROSSMEMBER



^ Place rubber cushions on crossmember.

^ Mark position of retaining bolts (2x per mount). Drill size 9.5 mm (3/8")

^ Remove rubber cushions.

CAUTION: HOLES MUST BE DRILLED, NOT BURNED



^ Remove grease and dirt from grounddown surfaces.

^ Apply primer (P/N 277918-9).

^ Allow to dry.

^ Apply rustproofing compound (P/N 282767-3).



^ Disconnect ground connection.

^ Clean mount contact faces on engine.



^ Install engine mounts.

NOTE: Left and right hand mounts are different. (left hand mount is shown here).

^ NOTE: Reconnect ground connection.



^ Install rubber cushions on engine.

^ Do not tighten at this stage.



^ Place front axle cross member on jack.

^ Secure cross member to control arms. Do not tighten bolts at this stage.

^ Remove jack.



^ Lower engine.



^ Place jack beneath front axle cross member and guide cross member into position.

^ Place bolt plate (P/N 1330970-3) on top side of cross member, bolts facing down (see page 1).

^ Tighten retaining bolts.

^ Tighten hand-tight four bolts securing cross member to body.

^ Remove jack.



^ Now tighten cross member to 95 N-m (70 ft.lbs.)



^ Remove lifting equipment 9995115-4 and 9995006-5.



^ Install steering gear. Tightening torque 44 N-m (32 ft.lbs.)

^ Install jack support plate.



^ Clean banjo nipples on power steering hoses and connections on steering gear.

^ Reconnect hoses.

^ Install new copper washers.

^ Tightening torque 42 N-m (30 ft. lbs.)



^ Install lower steering gear joint on steering gear.



^ Reconnect anti-roll bar.

^ Tightening torque 85 +/- 15 N-m (63 +/- 11 ft.lbs.)

^ Reconnect steering rod ends.



^ Install engine undertray.

^ Rock front end of vehicle a few times. Tighten control arm nut to front axle cross member. Be sure that weight is on wheels.

^ Tightening torque 85 N-m (63 ft. lbs.)



^ Reconnect battery (-).
^ Fill power steering reservoir with ATF

^ Turn steering wheel between locks to remove air from steering system.

^ Start engine. Turn steering wheel between locks.


^ Check power steering oil level. Top-up as required. Turn off engine.

ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid


^ Check position of steering wheel.
