AC B. Replacing steering column and ignition switch (700/940), with SRS

Special tools: 998 8695, 999 1801, 999 2724

Warning!
Take the recommended precautions when working with cars equipped with the SRS system. The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is removed or installed.

Note!
Connect special tool 998 8695 when the passenger module is removed. The tool is used to prevent a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) being stored when the engine is started.

AC B1
Removing steering wheel

The following description is based on a 1995 model year 940. The procedures described are applicable to all the principal components in earlier models of the 940 and 700 series cars when these are equipped with the SRS system.

AA C2
Preparations

- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed.
- Ignition off.

- Disconnect battery negative lead.

AA C3
Ensure that the steering wheel lock is unlocked

Warning!
The battery must not be connected when the steering wheel module is removed or installed.

- Turn ignition switch to position "1" so that the steering wheel lock is unlocked.

AA C4
Remove screws to steering wheel module

Undo screws (2 x Torx 30) from countersunk holes on back of steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel (90 in both directions) to access the screws.

AA C5
Remove steering wheel module

- Carefully lift out the steering wheel module and disconnect the connector from reverse of the module.
- Remove steering wheel module.

Warning!
The steering wheel module must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle.

Warning!
Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag!

Warning!
If a non-deployed passenger module is removed temporarily, it should be placed with the metal Side (rear) downwards in a protected place (the cargo compartment for example).

AA C6
Installing special tools

- Install special tool 998 8695 to SRS ignition cable connector.
- This makes it possible to drive the car without the SRS on-board diagnostic (OBD) system registering a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
- It the ignition is switched on when neither steering wheel module nor special tool are connected, an open-circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored. (Any diagnostic trouble code (DTC) must be erased.)

AA C7
Adjusting the front wheels

Undo but do not remove the steering wheel center bolt.
- Slacken off the steering wheel center bolt (with 18 mm socket wrench), but do not unscrew it completely!
- It should be possible to unscrew the bolt by hand in the next operation.

AA C8
Adjust the front wheels so that they point straight ahead.

- Connect battery negative lead.
- Drive the car straight and/or backwards on a level surface so that the front wheels point straight ahead.

Caution!
It is always important to point the wheels straight ahead when carrying out work that requires the removal of the steering wheel and/or contact reel.

Warning!
Do not drive the car further than necessary to align the front wheels. The steering wheel is not properly tightened and the steering wheel module has been removed!

Removing steering wheel

AA C9
Disconnect battery negative lead.

Caution!
This and the following operation should be carried out without disturbing the steering wheel position (front wheel direction).

AA C10
Remove special tool

AA C11
Remove the steering wheel center screw

- Do not disturb steering wheel.

AA C12
Remove screw from the parking hole

- Do not detach the screw from the plastic strip.
