SEE SMB 22-001 for Model Year 2013, the service maintenance interval is being changed to 10,000 miles/16,000 km or 1 year and to synthetic oil.

For Volvo cars prior to model year 2013 the following engine oil requirements apply.

Oil specifications

Engine oil must* meet the minimum ILSAC** specification GF-4, API** SM, or ACEA** A1/B1.

Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.

**International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), American Petroleum Institute (API), European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) Volume between the MIN and Max marks on the dipstick: approximately 1.4 US qts (1.3 liters).

Volvo recommends use of Castrol.

Depending on your customers driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection.

Oil additives must not be used.

* See below for possible exceptions.

* Operation in hot climates

When temperatures exceed 104F (40C) in your area, Volvo recommends, for the protection of the engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as such as SAE 5W-40 or 0W-40.

*Operation in temperate climates

Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life. Under normal use when temperatures do not exceed 104°F (40°C), SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection.

* Extreme engine operation

Synthetic oils meeting SAE 0W-30, 5w-30, or 0W-40 and complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous area.

Volvo Recommends Castrol

* Castrol products are factory fill in all Volvo engines.

* Using Castrol provides Volvo owners the highest quality oils and optimum performance from their vehicle.

* "Volvo recommends Castrol" is prominently displayed on oil filler caps and is in the owners manual. Customers seeing the recommendation will expect their Volvo retailer to install Castrol motor oil.

Volvo engineers prefer a minimum oil quality of ACEA A1/B1 to be used in North America to provide better engine protection. ACEA uses the M111 Sludge Test to rate an oils ability to fight sludge. Castrol GTX, SYNTEC Blend (5w-30 & 10w-30) and Castrol SYNTEC (all grades) pass the ACEA M111 Sludge Test. Other API SM, ILSAC GF4 oils may not meet this performance level.

Using the above Castrol products can provide better engine protection and superior sludge protection which is relevant to meet Volvos 7,500 mile oil drain interval.

Castrol North American Oil Program enhanced in 2006

To support retailers with the use of Castrol oil products the following program enhancements have been put in place. These enhancements include:
