REAR AXLE REMOVAL

Special tools: 2714, 5244
Two-column hoist will be found useful for this work.

Raise car
- Important if two-column hoist is used:
- Support front end under control arm brackets and rear end under jacking points.

NOTE: On cars with B 28, B 280 and D 24 engines: If car is not supported under brackets, it may be front- heavy.

- When removing, strip rear axle in two stages, before and after attaching fixture.

Strip rear axle of:
- Rear wheels. (1)
- Brake calipers. Tie calipers to springs. (2)
- Brake discs. (2)
- Handbrake shoes. (2) Disconnect cable from brake shoe levers. Remove bolts from pressure plate.
- Handbrake cable. (3) Disconnect cable from brake equalizing arms and clips on axle.
- Free rear axle from lower torque arm. (4) Loosen both torque arms in frame.

Attach fixture 2714 and position unit hoist
- Raise hoist slightly.

Remove:
- Exhaust pipe (applies to cars with pipe running under rear axle). Undo mountings. Support pipe under axle.
- Panhard rod (1)
- Speedometer connector (2)
- Propeller shaft (use socket 5244) (3)
- Upper torque arm from rear axle (4)
- Dampers from lower mountings in support arms (5)
- Support arm front brackets (6). Pry support arms loose from front mountings.

Remove rear axle

Remove support arms
- Mark right and left arms.
- Remove anti-roll bar (if fitted).

REAR AXLE INSTALLATION

Mount axle in fixture 2114

Install support arms
- Install rubber bushings and arms.
- Install clamps but do not tighten.
- Note right and left support arm markings.

Tighten clamps
- Tighten bolts alternately to 45 Nm (33 ft.lb).
- Install anti-roll bar, if fitted.

Raise rear axle
- Adjust support arms in relation to springs and front mountings.
- Install front bracket.
- Tighten bracket bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft.lb) and nuts to 85 Nm (63 ft.lb).

Install:
- Dampers. Tighten to 85 Nm (63 ft.lb).
- Propeller shaft. Use socket 5244. Use new nuts and bolts, and tighten alternately to 50 Nm (37 ft.lb).
- Speedometer seding unit.
- Panhard rod. Tighten to 85 Nm (63 ft.lb).
- Exhaust pipe. Raise axle as high as possible.
- Upper torque arm. Do not tighten arm at this point.

Remove fixture

Install but do not tighten lower torque arm
- If bolt is difficult to insert, undo support frame front mounting.
- Tighten frame mounting before tightening torque arm.

Tighten both torque arms to 140 Nm (103 ft.lb).

NOTE: Car must be loaded when tightening torque arms. For example, place trestles under rear axle. If car is not loaded when tightening arms, bushings may twist with suspension movement.

Install handbrake cable and brake levers
- Inspect rubber seals at brake shields.

Install:
- Drive shafts.
- Handbrake shoes.
- Brake discs.
- Brake calipers. Tighten to 60 Nm (44 ft.lb).
- Rear wheels. Tighten nuts to 65 Nm (63 ft.lb).
