Type 1030, 1031 and 1041 (Early Design)

Information applies to pre-1989 manuafctured Type 1030, 1031 and 1041 rear axles.

Speedometer Pickup

The electronic type speedometer recieves signals from a sensor unit.

Mounted in the [1][2]differential, the unit senses the rotation of the drive (axle) shafts (i.e. rear wheels), and consists of a pick-up and toothed wheel.

The pick-up is mounted on the inspection cover and secured by means of a special nut. The joint is sealed by an O-ring.

The toothed wheel is a press fit on the [1][2]differential housing. the component is made of pressed sheet steel and is provided with twelve openings.

The toothed wheel rotates at the speed of the [1][2]differential housing, which is the same as the road wheels. As it rotates past the pick-up, it generates a series of signal impulses which the speedometer converts into a reading corresponding to the road speed.

Pick-Up Mounted At Fixed Clearance From Toothed Wheel

The clearance between the toothed wheel and pick-up must be within certain limits. If work is carried out on the final drive or speedometer, the clearance must be adjusted by means of shims located between the pick-up and inspection cover.

NOTE: Adjustment applies only to a pick-up mounted in a steel inspection cover.
