PUR Bonded Windshield Installation

PUR BONDED WINDSHIELD INSTALLATION

Inspect the paintwork.

If the paintwork has been damaged, despite precautions, the defects must be painted over using touch-up paint.

Replace damaged or defective spacers and supports.

Locate the windshield supports as shown in the diagram.

AFTER BODYWORK REPAIR:

If any section of the flange has been replaced or repaired it must be treated with primer coat, top coat and then coated with paint primer (red cap), P/N 1161386-6.

Apply the PUR/RIM activator (blue cap), P/N 1161373-4 on surfaces on the flange that are not newly painted. Use protective gloves.

Install new rubber strip P/N 1307853-0 between the body flange and the dashboard (if needed).

Install anti-squeak tape P/N 3537456-0 to rubber strip (if needed).

Note
Before beginning work the trim strip around the windshield must be removed. If the trim strip is left in place it can lift the windshield off the body flange.

Place the new windshield with the inside up on a stand so that there is access all the way around it.

Apply the suction cups.

CLEAN THE BONDING AREA OF THE WINDSHIELD USING H CLEANER

Use protective gloves.

Coat the bonding surface of the windshield edge with glass activator (yellow cap).

Coat the bonding surface with glass primer (green cap). Apply liberally without allowing primer to run.

Let the primer dry until the surface is of a matt finish.

Apply coat of RIM activator (blue cap) on half of the width of the trim holder around the entire windshield.

Note
If PUR is to be applied to flange, apply RIM activator (blue cap) to flange.

LOAD THE 2 COMPONENT PISTOL.

Screw on the nozzle.

Out off the guide pin.

ENSURE THAT VENTILATION IS GOOD. USE PROTECTIVE GLOVES DURING THE ENTIRE BONDING OPERATION.

Apply PUR adhesive to the windshield or directly on the windshield flange.

Hold the applicator pistol at a right angle to the windshield and apply smoothly to the windshield's bonding surface.

The bead of adhesive should be approx. 12 mm (1/2") high and approx. 8 mm (5/16") wide on the windshield.

Apply the bead in one continuous operation without stopping to ensure a joint that will seal satisfactorily.

Make sure that approx. 5 mm (13/64") of the trim holder's width is covered at the same time.

INSTALL WINDSHIELD

The windshield must be installed within 10 minutes of applying the adhesive.

Press into place by hand. The gap at each short side must be the same.

Ensure that the bottom edge of the windshield is resting on the supports.

Wind down the side windows so that the windshield does not get pushed out by air pressure if a car door is closed before the FUR adhesive has hardened fully.

Apply butyl tape as shown in the diagram.

The butyl must be located around the entire upper edge of the windshield approx. 200 mm (7 3/4") down the A post.

Note
The butyl tape helps prevent wind noise.

Before installing the trim strip the FUR adhesive must have cured for approx. 10 minutes. Install the trim strip, use white petroleum jelly.

Note
The car must not be used for four hours after the windshield has been installed.

Note
If the car is equipped with a SRS-system then a decal (P/N 3517690-8) is available.
