Installation of extra sealing strip to eliminate whistling sound
An extra rubber sealing strip may be installed to eliminate a whistling sound which may come from the joint between the bulkhead and windshield wiper well cover panel. The wiper arms, seals and cover panel must be removed when installing the new strip.
The sealing strip, p/n 3512224-1, must be cut to the correct length after installation.
Remove both wiper arms
Check that wiper motor is in parked position.
Raise each wiper arm in turn. Raise and fold back spindle cap while lowering arm towards windshield.
Loosen nut a few turns and press arm upward against nut with tool such as adjustable pliers.
Caution:
Care should be taken to avoid damage to paint and trim.
Remove nut and arm.
Remove wiper well cover panel
Open hood and raise to fully open (service) position.
Remove rubber seals (1). Twist seals through half a turn and pull straight up.
Release washer hoses from clips (2).
Remove three panel retaining screws (3). (Older models have plastic clips instead of screws on outer edges.)
Lower hood to normal open position.
Remove panel by pulling forward slightly, then lifting upward and backward. Remove carefully to avoid paint damage.
Return hood to service position.
Install sealing strip
Clean surface (A) with dry cloth at point of attachment of sealing strip (F).
Start by attaching strip at corner beside edge of fender (B). Run strip along complete flange (surface A) to opposite side (C).
Cut off excess length at point C.
Press strip firmly into position so that it is bonded securely.
Note:
(D) indicates cover panel sealing strip and (E) the panel.
Reinstall cover panel
Lower hood to normal open position.
Install cover panel by placing rear edge in position against mounting flange below windshield.
Slide the cover panel towards the windshield making sure the cover panel engages in the clips on the firewall under the windshield. Work carefully to avoid paint damage.
Ensure that both sealing strips are seated against each other.
Secure panel with screws/plastic clips as appropriate.
Raise hood to service position.
Secure washer hoses in clips.
Close hood.
Check and adjust panel fit with hood and fender edges.
Adjust if necessary.
Reinstall wiper arms
Place arms loosely on spindles.
Adjust arms as illustrated and press into position.
Install and tighten nuts
Torque 16 N-m (12 ft.lb.).
Press down spindle caps.
